Acting veterans John Turturro and Rupert Everett along with young actor Damien Hardung (“The Red Band Society”) have scored the lead roles in a new high-end TV adaptation of Umberto Eco’s period thriller novel “The Name of the Rose” for Wild Bunch TV.

Turturro will play 14th century Franciscan monk William of Baskerville who investigates a series of grisly murders in a Northern Italy Benedictine abbey. Hardung plays Benedictine novice Adso of Melk and Everett plays the antagonist Inquisitor Bernard Gui.

Veteran Italian TV helmer Giacomo Battiato will direct the eight episode English-language seried which boasts a $27 million budget and will be produced by Matteo Levi and Carlo Degli Esposti. Andrea Porporati and Nigel Williams co-wrote this adaptation with Eco supervising the screenplays before his passing.

Filming begins in January at Cinecitta Studios in Rome. The project was previously adapted for the big screen by Jean-Jacques Annaud in 1986. That notably dark and brutal film starred Sean Connery as William, Christian Slater as Adso, F. Murray Abraham as Bernard and Michael Lonsdale and Ron Perlman in supporting roles.
