“New Mutants” Tone & Story Details, Casting Talk

new-mutants-tone-story-details-casting-talk-696x464.jpg

Josh Boone’s upcoming “X-Men” spin-off film “The New Mutants” is nearly at the starting line with filming to get underway on the project in July.

Speaking with EW about the film this week, Boone says the tone will be much darker than the main series and will avoid certain familiar elements – such as uniforms:

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

The story follows five teenage mutants who, held in a secret facility against their will, have to battle the dangers of their recently emerged powers, as well as the sins of their past. The film’s stakes will be kept much more personal.

Boone and Knate Lee penned the script and Boone says Fox is pushing to “make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can.”

The comment comes as more names have been rumored for the film in the article. Already confirmed are Anya Taylor-Joy (“Split”) as Magik and Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) as Wolfsbane, today comes word that Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”) is being linked to play Sunspot, and Rosario Dawson is in talks to play the mentor figure Dr. Cecilia Reyes who also has the ability to generate an invisible bio-field around herself.

Both Nat Wolff and James McAvoy had also been linked to making an appearance as Cannonball and Charles Xavier, but both possibilities have reportedly fallen through.

“The New Mutants” is currently targeting an April 13th release.

Two More Set For “X-Men: The New Mutants”

“Stranger Things” star Charlie Heaton is in negotiations to play Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball, in the “X-Men” spinoff “The New Mutants” at 20th Century Fox. In the comics, the character is invulnerable when he’s in the air.

At the same time, The Tracking Board has confirmed an earlier rumor that Henry Zaga (“Teen Wolf”) will play Brazilian hero Roberto da Costa, aka the super hot mutant Sunspot. “Designated Survivor” regular Adan Canto played the role in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”.

Josh Boone (“The Fault in Our Stars”) directs from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee about teenage superheroes-mutants. Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams are already signed on as Magik and Wolfsbane respectively with Rosario Dawson in talks to play Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

The key role of Mirage has yet to be cast with Blu Hunt and True O’Brien having previously been rumoured for the role.

Simon Kinberg and Karen Rosenfelt are producing the film which is in pre-production and has been set for an April 13th 2018 release.

Blu Hunt Set For “X-Men: The New Mutants”

After an international search, newcomer Blu Hunt (“The Originals”) has nabbed the lead role of Native American telepath Danielle Moonstar in Josh Boone’s “X-Men” spinoff “The New Mutants” at 20th Century Fox.

She joins a cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy (“Split”) as Magik, Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”) as Sunspot and Rosario Dawson.

Moonstar is said to be the last major mutant role in the film. In the comics, she has the power to create illusions drawn from the fears and desires of a person’s mind. The story follows five diverse teens learning to cope with their superpowers who must escape a secret facility in which they are being held against their will.

The new film is said to have more of a horror-thriller tone and will borrow heavily from the Demon Bear storyline which ran in the title in the 1980s. “New Mutants” is scheduled to begin filming in July in Boston.

In the comics, the bear is a powerful demonic entity that’s linked to Danielle Moonstar/Mirage’s Cheyenne history, and emerges from her psyche to torment her young teammates. We can probably expect a few liberties to be taken with the source material of course, but that’s the general gist of it.

Alice Braga (“Predators,” “Elysium,” “Queen of the South”) has joined the cast of Josh Boone’s “X-Men” horror-thriller spinoff “New Mutants”.

The story follows five diverse teens (Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt) learning to cope with their superpowers who must escape a secret facility where they are being held against their will.

Braga will play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on.

Braga will take over the role initially inhabited by Rosario Dawson who has exited the project, the reason for her departure is unclear. Filming begins next month in Boston ahead of an April 13th 2018 release.

Josh Boone has used social media to announce that the final week of production is now underway on the X-Men spin-off “New Mutants” at 20th Century Fox.

Boone has previously stated that the project will be a ‘full-fledged horror movie’ and the photo, providing a glimpse of the film’s bloody logo, would seem to confirm that. “New Mutants” is set to hit cinemas on April 13th.

In related X-Men news, Garret Dillahunt (“Deadwood,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”) is set for a key recurring role in this Fall’s new “X-Men” drama series “The Gifted” for FOX. Dillahunt will play Roderick Campbell, a mutant researcher contracted by the Sentinel Service and on a morally dubious mission.

The series from writer Matt Nix and “X-Men” director Bryan Singer focuses on a suburban couple (Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker) whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers which forces them to go on the run.

Filmmaker Josh Boone and some of the cast of his upcoming “X-Men” spin-off film “The New Mutants” have taken to social media to confirm that shooting on the project has just wrapped.

“Game of Thrones” alum Maisie Williams, who plays Wolfsbane, also posted a shot from the set of the film which is said to adopt both a younger and more horror-toned vibe than the main “X-Men” films. Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga co-star in the film which was shot in a pretty speedy sixty days.

The project will now go into post for the next few months with the movie targeting an April 13th 2018 release.

“New Mutants” Director Talks Sequels & Crossover

new-mutants-x-men-crossover-sequel-ideas-696x464.jpg

Following in the wake of Friday’s teaser trailer, filmmaker Josh Boone has spoken about his upcoming “X-Men” spin-off film “The New Mutants” and says he pitched a trilogy to 20th Century Fox with plans already in place for potential follow-ups should the first be successful.

Speaking with IGN, he says that despite the overt horror overtones of the material that it is very much a part of the “X-Men” film universe and takes place in the present day:

“We brought it to FOX as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the 1980s. These are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies.

This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie. Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.

It is connected to and a part of the X-Men universe, and will continue to be a part of the X-Men universe and will be a part of that as it opens up in the next movies and all that.”

The first film is reportedly heavily influenced by Chris Claremont’s Demon Bear Saga from the comics, but the Demon Bear is not the film’s primary antagonist:

“I wouldn’t want to give away too much. Although I will say there’s stuff you’ll never see in the trailers that are big parts of the movie.”

He goes on to say reaction to the teaser trailer so far has often involved complaints about characters that aren’t in it right now and he offers a tease of two fan faves being saved for sequels:

“We’re going to introduce new characters in the next movie as well. Characters like Karma and Warlock, and all that will be in future movies.”

“The New Mutants” is currently slated for an April 13th 2018 release.

“New Mutants” Being Reworked To Be Scarier?

new-mutants-x-men-crossover-sequel-ideas-696x464.jpg

On Thursday came the news that three of the upcoming “X-Men” films are being shifted around on FOX’s schedule with the most notable news being the delay of Josh Boone’s “The New Mutants” spin-off which was pushed back almost a full year.

The official reason is Fox didn’t want any overlap between it and “Deadpool 2” opening mid-May. Now though, The Tracking Board says the extensive ten month delay is for another likely reason – reshoots.

Specifically, they report the film “tested well, but not great” recently and say Fox now wants to up the horror and scare quotient of the film – especially in the wake of the success of R-rated horror like “IT” and “Get Out”. The Wrap had a similar report with their source saying the current cut of the film “isn’t scary enough”.

“The New Mutants” follows five young mutants who are just discovering their special abilities trying to escape a secret facility where they’re being held against their will. It marks the first of the “X-Men” films to be situated squarely in the horror genre.

“The New Mutants” now opens February 22nd 2019.

Maisie Williams Talks “New Mutants” Delay

Originally slated to be the first of the three “X-Men” related movies to hit this year, word came not long ago that the teen-centric and horror-toned spin-off “The New Mutants” was to be pushed back nearly a year – from this April to February 2019.

Maisie Williams, who plays Wolfsbane in the film, says the delay is a good thing as it will likely make it an even better film as there will be more time to get it into shape. She tells Collider:

“Actually, I think it’s for the better. I think it’s good that we’ve got more time. We’re not so strapped and up against it. It give us time – it gives me time to get to know the project once its finalized.

Films take a real different shape after you finish shooting, and after they have edited. Sometimes you watch a movie and with the score, etc, it’s a completely different film than the one you had in mind. I guess you only know that when you have just done the premiere or whatever.

Your spending your whole life working on this film that actually you don’t know much about at all. It’s quite nice that there is the time, to you know, make it the best that one can and familiarize ourselves with it and when it comes to releasing, really push it hard.”

“New Mutants” wrapped principal photography last September, so April was always going to be tight turnaround time. Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt and Alice Braga co-star in the Josh Boone-directed film.

“New Mutants” Was To Have A Sinister Hamm?

new-mutants-was-to-have-a-sinister-hamm-696x464.jpg

First it was ten months, then a further sixth – either way when Fox’s “The New Mutants” movie does finally make it to screens it certainly won’t be the same movie that was to have been originally released in the next few weeks.

There’s been plenty of speculation over the delays, though it has been confirmed that at least one new character is set to be added to the film. Now, The Tracking Board has released an extensive report on the behind-the-scenes kerfuffle and what’s causing the changes.

The site reports that with the success of “IT,” the studio revised their original PG-13 mandate and allowed for director Josh Boone to go back to his early vision of a full horror film as opposed to the Stephen King-John Hughes hybrid that was shot and was tested to reportedly very good scores. Whether the new scenes will push this into an R-rated feature is unclear, but supposedly most are in the first half of the film.

The site also reveals some details about the film’s post-credit scene which will now be overhauled. The site reports that it would’ve continued the ‘Essex Corporation’ stinger from “X-Men: Apocalypse” and gone as far as featuring actor Jon Hamm as the villain Mister Sinister. Now though, that scene has reportedly been scrapped and will instead feature a different villain to be played by Antonio Banderas.

“The New Mutants” is currently targeting an August 2019 release.

“New Mutants” Set To Go Full Horror

new-mutants-set-to-go-full-horror-696x464.jpg

Earlier this year came word that Josh Boone’s “X-Men” spin-off “The New Mutants” was being significantly delayed, ultimately by almost eighteen months, to accommodate extensive reshoots.

The story follows five young mutants who are just discovering their special abilities trying to escape a secret facility where they’re being held against their will. It marks the first of the “X-Men” films to be situated in the horror genre.

Reports suggested the film tested not as good as Fox had hoped, with criticism being it simply wasn’t scary enough. So they intended to up the horror quotient of the film, upping the movie to a full blown R-rating.

This week actor Charlie Heaton, who plays Cannonball in the film, has confirmed it is indeed a full-on horror film now. He tells EW:

“It’s basically about these mutants in a facility for damaged mutants. It’s a story about these characters coming to grips with who they are and it’s a horror X-Men movie, which we haven’t seen before.

I feel like, for an X-Men movie, yeah, I think they’re going full-fledged horror. Without saying too much – I really don’t want to give away too much what it’s about, it’s very under wraps – but it is, in terms of anything we’ve seen in the X-Men world, it definitely is a horror film. It’s scarier than anything we’ve seen in that genre.”

Right now the film is targeting a late Summer 2019 bow. Whether that date will be impacted by the Disney Pictures/20th Century Fox deal, which is expected to be finalised about the same time, is unclear.

Taylor-Joy Comments On “New Mutants” Reshoots

taylor-joy-comments-on-new-mutants-reshoots-696x464.jpg

At the start of the year, 20th Century Fox did something unexpected with its “X-Men” spin-off film “The New Mutants” film. Having already begun marketing the film with a trailer and key art, they ended up delaying it from its planned April release – pushing the movie back first to February 2019 and then later that year in August.

A delay of well over a year for a relatively small film suggested serious problems, and/or more likely massive reshoots – the latter confirmed with the film undergoing a major overhaul and introducing an entirely new character to what was an already completed narrative.

The delays are understandably frustrating for fans, and more so for those who worked on the film including “Split” actress Anya Taylor-Joy who plays Magik in the movie. Back in March, the actress said the delay was “disappointing, frustrating in fact” but added: “it’s more important to make sure that we get it right than rushing to make a date.”

Now, half a year on, she’s spoken to Collider and seems more upbeat about the project and the reshoots helping the movie find its real tone:

“It’s crazy exciting! I love my character. I have such a connection to Illyana. I absolutely adore her, and getting to play her is super fun because she’s sassy and Russian and a little bit psycho. She’s just so much fun to play.

I don’t find [the delay] frustrating because when the film comes out, we want it to be something that will make the fans truly happy.

Taking the time to do it, whilst people might find it a little bit frustrating to wait for it, when we deliver it, it’s going to be fantastic. That’s the most important thing. And getting the opportunity to play the character again is just great.

I think we’re making the movie that we set out to make, in the beginning. That’s what we’re going to end up delivering to people. It feels like the movie we all signed up to do, which is good.”

Alice Braga, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga co-star in the film about five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fighting to escape their past sins and save themselves.

“The New Mutants” opens August 2nd 2019.

“New Mutants” Could Be Delayed To November?

new-mutants-could-be-delayed-to-nov-696x464.jpg

Fox’s “The New Mutants” remains somewhat in limbo. The movie, originally aiming to be an R-rated and more horror-centric spin-off of the “X-Men” franchise along with a potential trilogy launcher, is stuck.

Having launched a first trailer back in October 2017 ahead of a mid-2018 release, the movie was ultimately delayed by more than a year to August this year. At the time it was said the project would undergo a massive retooling with extensive reshoots that originally were planned to kick off in September last year.

We’re now in January and those reshoots haven’t happened yet, with studio 20th Century Fox and director Josh Boone still trying to nail the film’s tone down. Merc with a Podcast (via CBM has now weighed in today saying Fox may once again delay the film – this time to early November.

The site also says the possibility of the film going straight to Hulu in October is there, with the impending closure of the Disney-Fox merger also not really helping the film’s fate. Its indicated Fox originally wanted a softer cut of the film and Boone ultimately agreed and delivered, but now Fox is trying to get scary elements back into the movie with some cuts around the studio being PG-13 while others were said to be more akin to something like “Hereditary”.

For now, the film is still holding on its August 2nd release.

Ostensibly an R-rated teen horror spin-off of the “X-Men” franchise and a potential trilogy launcher, this was once a very promising project which wowed ’em last year with a very well received early teaser trailer. The story follows five young mutants, just discovering their abilities whilst held in a secret facility against their will, as they fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. It’s a teen horror take on “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and it sounded great. Then everything went off the rails – the film was delayed by more than a year, reports came of massive retooling and reshoots being required with at least one whole new character being introduced into the narrative and as much as half the movie being completely redone. The plan is to really make this much more frightening than the original cut was, but some involved have expressed reservations. With Fox set to be fully swallowed by Disney by the time it’s released, it will hopefully be an interesting one-off effort.

“New Mutants” May Well Go To Disney+

taylor-joy-comments-on-new-mutants-reshoots-696x464.jpg

All of the attention paid to the “X-Men” franchise this week has been about “Dark Phoenix” and its recent launch of two new trailers, the great big spoiler within them, and the baffling decision to delete the far superior trailer that went online.

However, there’s another “X-Men” film on the way, the young adult-skewering horror film “The New Mutants”. At last report reshoots were initially expected to happen sometime last summer in order to add more horror elements to the film, but that didn’t happen and no additional photography has yet been scheduled.

At present, the film is slated to open August 2nd and THR reports that the project remains firmly in the hands of director Josh Boone for the moment. In addition, they say while it very likely will get a release, it’s a “safe bet” that it could well bypass cinemas and make its way to the new Disney+ streaming service to premiere.

Disney is expected to complete its acquisition of 20th Century Fox by mid-March at which time it will likely start shaking up Fox’s product currently in the pipeline.

Talk Mounts Of “New Mutants” Disney+ Release

new-mutants-set-to-go-full-horror-696x464.jpg

Ahead of the Disney/Fox merger becoming locked in place, Josh Boone’s “The New Mutants” was supposed to undergo extensive reshoots to add new characters and drastically alter its tone.

Those reshoots haven’t happened yet and now indications keep mounting that rather than proceed with then, Fox’s new owners Disney will instead just release the film in its current state on its Disney+ streaming service.

A new report in Vanity Fair says the film will be a “likely casualty” of the merger and “its moderate budget, younger cast, and smaller spectacle make it the perfect title to send directly to consumers.”

In addition, a source for SHH has claimed the reshoot talk was to incorporate “Logan” star Dafne Keen’s X-23 character, while rumours about Mister Sinister being included were completely false and the recent talk of a lesbian relationship between Wolfsbane and Mirage in the film is only talk because in the film all they actually do is a quick kiss during a game of Spin the Bottle.

For now, “The New Mutants” remains on Fox’s release schedule. That schedule is expected to be overhauled shortly after Disney completes its takeover of Fox later this week.
