In high school, I took an independent reading class, where we could pick the books we wanted to read, and then just did reports on them. At the beginning of the semester, I went to the library and picked up For Whom The Bell Tolls, because I'd heard it was a classic and because I was a Metallica fan. I nearly flunked the class because it got halfway through the semester, and I wasn't even halfway through the book. The teacher suggested I pick another book, and I read four or five in the last half.
Anyway, I found his writing - in that book, anyway - to be extremely dry and failed to captivate me. Maybe someday I'll check out some of his other work, but that book put me off of him.
