Paul Foster, an experienced test pilot , and his co-pilot spot a UFO high up in the clouds.
SHADO launch an attack on the UFO after failing to convince the private aircraft corporation involved to divert their craft, telling them they've entered a war games zone. They can't reveal the truth, SHADO and the whole secret war against the aliens mustn't be revealed.
The aircraft is caught up as the UFO is destroyed and nosedives.
Foster awakens in hospital, his co pilot dead. After being released he sets about trying to prove his UFO sighting is true and not a story concocted to explain away his actions leading to crashing an expensive plane.
But SHADO must cover their tracks. How far will Straker go to protect the anonymity of SHADO?
Foster gets a hearing with a military investigations unit where the plane's automatic camera film is played on a screen. No UFO, the film doctored. He then breaks into his bosses office and opens the safe to recover film from his personal camera that he used to take pictures of the UFO. But developing these reveals they've been altered too.
Then thugs come to his home to not so gently convince him to drop his investigation.
Foster remembers he saw a letter in his boss's safe from Straker, and going through old newspapers confirms that head of Straker film studios is the same Straker as U.S. air force officer some years previously.
Foster is getting close to uncovering the truth. Straker's number 2 Alec Freeman is worried,
. " what happens if he gets too close?"
Straker " one man or the security of a billion dollar organization, what do you think?"
Foster gets a meeting with Straker at the studio, an insists he knows what he saw and will not stop until someone believes him. Straker has a choice, kill him or ....
Foster is shown into Straker's studio office, and gets a surprise as the whole office is really a disguised lift that descends into the ground. Underneath the studio is SHADO HQ.
Straker reveals all the clues that led him to the studio were deliberately left for him to follow....an initiative test.
Straker " SHADO needs men, can you be one Foster? Capable of piloting the most advanced craft, captaining the world's most advanced submarines. After a training course that will tear your guts out you might be halfway there"
