Information UFO ORDER ORDER

U.F.O. probably has a more convoluted episode order puzzle than any other show except possibly The Prisoner. It all stems from the fact that the show was recorded in two blocks. The first 17 at Borehamwood then after months the rest at Pinewood. Some actors were unable to resume their roles and therefore didn't appear in the Pinewood episodes. Poor George Sewell as Alec Freeman was simply not asked back because the US backers didn't think him sexy or cool enough as a number 2.
Now the non appearance of these characters wasn't explained, so if you watched the series in production order they'd be a sudden disappearance of characters and a few new ones introduced at episode 18. However the series was never shown that way originally, the Pinewood episodes were mixed in with the earlier Borehamwood episodes. The dvd releases mostly, certainly in the UK, have the episodes in production order. So to start here is my preferred order, Pinewood episodes marked *

1. Identified
2. Exposed
3. Flight Path
4. Conflict
5. The Square Triangle
6. The Dalotek Affair
7. Confetti Check A-O.K
8. ESP
9. Survival
10. The Man Who Came Back*
11. A Question of Priorities
12. The Sound of Silence *
13. Sub-Smash
14. Court Martial
15. Destruction *
16. Ordeal
17. Close Up
18. Kill Straker
19. The Cat With Ten Lives *
20. Computer Affair
21. The Psychobombs *
22. Mindbender *
23. Responsibility Seat
24. Timelash *
25. Reflections In The Water *
26. The Long Sleep *
I'm not going to drone on about the reasons in detail, and I also don't look at the absolute minor details when deciding my order, such as the date on newspapers that Ed Straker is seen reading. My concern is the broad flow of the series and getting the Pinewood episodes nicely placed in the series. These Pinewood ones are definitely better viewed near the end , so it's a question of placing a few earlier and holding back some Borehamwood ones.
Sub-Smash and Mindbender have to be after A Question of Priorities as the former two have flashbacks of the latter. Confetti Check A-O.K is usually shown after Question Of Priorities however I prefer it before QOP simply because in the latter Straker is divorced and if Confetti is watched first then there's more of a mystery about what will happen to the marriage, as that episode deals with Straker's juggling of SHADO responsibility with his marriage. Though Confetti if watched later than QOP you understand better Straker's melancholy mood in SHADO HQ when an officer announces he is a new dad, considering what happens to his son in QOP. So 50/50 for me, I prefer Confetti first but later is OK.
Responsibility Seat is the last episode for the Borehamwood characters, at ep 23, an episode with three favourites not seen in the Pinewood episodes, Gay Ellis, Joan Harrington and Alec Freeman. Cat With Ten Lives originally ridiculously shown third must be late on as it deals with a startling game changing revelation about the aliens that isn't mentioned again.
Paul Foster appears first in Exposed, so I have him away training for the next episode Flight Path that he's not in, then back in Conflict where he's on the moon in charge, as he is early on, before becoming more important later. ESP and The Square Triangle I think are relatively early because Foster is new and being ordered by Straker to go out in SHADO Mobiles, land vehicles.
Survival takes place in 1981 according to the narrative, the series starts in 1980, so that's reasonably early. Computer Affair though made second seems to be in 1984, judging by a comment Mark Bradley makes, so a later one, I think, and it was originally shown 21st.
Kill Straker sees Straker mention his plan to get vastly improved automated moonbase defence systems in place in case of a mass attack, at ep 18 enough time passes to get at least some improvements in place for the mass attack in Reflections In the Water that represents the aliens final all out assault, the penultimate episode, with the last episode Long Sleep dealing with the aftermath of a long delayed previous alien plan, so not a new one.
Also Foster seems to have a relationship, sort of with Virginia Lake later on, so his flirtations in other episodes I've put earlier.
Anyway there is probably no real correct order, so enjoy this tremendous series , links below to get you going.
