Wenk Planning A New “Universal Soldier”
“The Equalizer” screenwriter Richard Wenk has revealed to Discussing Film that he’s about to turn in a script for a ‘re-imagining’ of the 1992 action feature “Universal Soldier”.
Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day,” “Stargate”) helmed the film which saw the teaming of action stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as two dead Vietnam War soldiers brought back to life to become unstoppable killing machines. The film launched multiple direct-to-video sequels, some of which were not bad. Of the new one, Wenk says:
“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called Universal Soldier…very much like The Equalizer, it’s the title that inspired me and not the movies…I’m just about to finish (the script) and turn it in this week.”
Wenk is also behind the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter” film in development at Sony Pictures.
