The platforms have different consoles like PS2, 3 and 4 or Xbox 360 and the One. Then there are console exclusive games that could get their own thread like that. If we throw them all into one place then it will be impossible to extend different threads for different consoles or games.
I was thinking of even giving each their own Category but this will do just fine for now. I'd rather have the space than giving up some in a later staduim :)
IMDb tried to do that, they separated the VG boards between Consoles, PCs, VG General, etc and it was a failure. And that was IMDb who had thousands of thousands of members.

IMDF is still on its early stage, so I think it's not gonna work, at least for now. Let me say that I'm stating my opinion because I've seen in locu this not really working on IMDb. It's still my opinion. ;)

We have no idea how it will look eventually, but someone has to start somewhere somehow. We don't have enough to say we have a system, but we do want to achieve that in the end. It IS possible at this moment.
I've said that to your colleague that probably thet best option is doing what IMDb did: having the movies/TV shows/actors/videogames message boards only available via a Seacr Bar, not need to waste space with a giant board stating every individual message board from IMDF in existence. But the Main Message Boards should still be in the main page exactly like right now.

NOt sure what you meant with mainpage mess, but the main page is main categories and sub cat's, then comes the threads and individual ones.

The search should work fine as far as I know and tried. If a thread exists it should pop up.
I'm a bit lost about the "not sure what you meant with mainpage mess". Did I really say that? I don't remember that. Maybe I worded it wrong.

Right now I'm not seeing where I've said that.

Can you maybe elaborate on that and give some suggestions. I have a hard time seeing what you mean with this. And it doesnt get any different after looking at those furoms you linked ;)
Attention that when I mentioned the design it's just my opinion and IMDF's current design, like you guys have stated, it's just temporary.

What I'm saying is that in my opinion if IMDF wants to get even more members right on its early stage I think you guys should try a bit more "complex" design, or just a not so simple design.

I say this because the first impression is very important. I've been trying to give the word-of-mouth about this forum and the other IMDb alternatives, and many IMDb users think that IMDF currently has a very simple and flat design. For now, obviously.

I think you guys should try to give it more colors, a more complex logo, a design similar to IMDb. To make people feel more like home.

That's the only thing I'm saying. But surely this is gonna be improved a lot, it's normal. Hell I even think that IMDF is the one with the most potential, tied up with The Movie DB (which is still pretty empty).

;)

Could there possibly be a "down" arrow? Just the opposite of the 'up' arrow. Or is this function here and I don't know about it? Thanks...:):):)

Would you like a realtime chat here?

As the title says.

I can implement a full realtime chat inside the forums, for those that are willing to go close and personal and willing to chat about stuff. The chat can be implement without incurring into any performance penalty due to the power the server has and can serve for people who also want to make conversations into a more direct way.

It's a complement to the forums.

I will leave the community to decide.

I thought everyone figured that one out? I wasn't going to use any of the hand signs around it just in case. When I first seen it, I thought franks and beans?
I can't use or display any of the site emoticons or smiley's, they crash the tab I'm on. I'm using a NOOK/Galaxy4 very limited tablet...♡♡♡:):):)

Here it is :p

There's no need to put on the main page those individual boards, it'd be a mess.
You might have worded it wrong, I might have misunderstood. But that's why I ask before saying something that doesnt make sense lol.

I understand what you mean now with 'flat' and the fact members can have different themes is basically why it looks a bit flat atm. First impressions are very important, I agree, but we had to make a choice between working on a graphical design or getting everything working properly.

When you look at the feedback we get from current members it is more geared towards functionality and not design. Another reason might be that members have more choice and access to these Categories were they can give us feedback and put in requests and suggestions compared to Guests.

IMDb tried to do that, they separated the VG boards between Consoles, PCs, VG General, etc and it was a failure. And that was IMDb who had thousands of thousands of members.
I did not really took that from IMDb, that was my own idea and simply because I want to have the space to create more layers. If this doesnt work out as intended, I can easily redo it and make it one Category. The other way around would be impossible or a LOT of work atleast, that's why and that's what I meant.

many IMDb users think that IMDF currently has a very simple and flat design. For now, obviously.
They should register and tell us here

But yes, I see what you meant with that and will obviously keep it in mind, thank you for all the effort of discussing this

Thank you for understanding me. ;)

About the first part. Ah yes! When I said "mess" I was just saying that having thousands of individual message boards form thousands of individual movies on IMDF's main page would be a mess.

That's why I mentioned the Search Bard which IMDb has. I mean, on IMDb individual movie message boards are scattered around and can only get accessed by searching those movies.

That's what I meant. ;)

I'm wondering if one of your four is MovieChat.org and what you think of it?...:):):)
Yes, and the thing is...it seems two of these sites have great movie databases, and two have great message boards, and it is frustrating to me that they are not the same two! I would like to see this situation resolved by the best sites merging. It's not necessary or maybe even desirable for all four to become one as we DO want to have a backup in case of disaster or maybe just an alternate site with a different character.

Alex, you know I'm not tech savy, so this could be a really dumb question , but is there a way to do the above? Have a great movie database w/great message boards?

The majority of the other sites do the design with free software and or free services. I already offered my work for free but with licensed software (as is this forum built) with profesional hosting services. imdb2 seemed to be interested in the idea but as soon as the admin found out that he had more users registered on that forum than on this one, he didn't want to play and decided to keep it's forum as it is.

I did make contact with some of the rest and they all have completely different ideas than mine. Design is not their primary issue and they all seem to built it with free software. I'm against using free software / free services as they have severe limitations to the grow of the forum. I would love to see a merge but that won't happen if I need to just give up my well thought out forum running on licensed software (which I paid and it is very expensive) so it is merged with a free service forum that may end up being discarted when said admin grows tired of handling it.

Merge is a nice idea but not applicable in the real world unless mature people get it's acts together to make a careful well thought forum that can resist traffic and years of archiving. I don't see that happen on the others and since my project is very long-term, i prefer to keep it like it is, improving it and making it better because I believe in my expertise to handle the forum and the upgrades necesary.

Joining together with the wrong prople can be disasterous.

Thanks for the answers in layman's terms that I understand. Do you think it could be put to a vote for you to do a movie database? Maybe its not a concern for everyone, with a vote you could find out, YES?:):):)
Yes, but that's not an easy task mind you, it's a tremendous one. If I receive help from other contributors I may think about it, otherwise it's gonna be hard because as it is, my free time is devoted to mantain and improve this forum, I don't think I could have more free time to mantain a movie database, unless it's something that can give me a return of income.
