Review A Snake of June Shinya Tsukamoto, 2002)

It's not x-rated and on last rewatch I realized it doesn't even have as much nudity as it gives a first impression of. It is, though, the most erotic non-porn movie I've ever seen. Shinya Tsukamoto has said that he started out wanting to make a typical sex thriller in the mold of the usual Hollywood stuff, but what he ended up with was a rarity if not a complete anomaly: a movie in which sexuality is redemptive instead of demonized. Then you've got Tsukamoto's own flavor setting it apart, not just his visual style but his strong humanist streak. Tetsuo: The Iron Man is so anarchic it really doesn't hint at the bulk of his work, but most in the West have only seen Tetsuo.

Snake is easily my favorite Tsuakamoto, one of my all-time favorite movies period, and I never tire of the promoting it. Top 3 would be this, Tokyo Fist, and Bullet Ballet.

Anyone else seen it? Waddya think? I see ebossert is a member here, he was the resident expert on Asian cinema at IMDb. I just know Gojira, Tsukamoto, and a smattering of Sion Sono.
