Studio Ghibli Re-Opens For Miyazaki’s Next

Four years ago, legendary Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki (“Spirited Away,” “Princess Mononoke,” “My Neighbor Totoro”) said he was retiring and that his last film would be “The Wind Rises”. His animation studio, Studio Ghibli, soon shuttered its production department.

Then last year came a tease in the Japanese television special “The Man Who Is Not Done” that Miyazaki would come out of retirement and make another film – later discovered to be “Boro the Caterpillar”.

Originally intended as a short, the Japanese master said it left him with an unsatisfied feeling and so he presented a proposal to make a full length movie with plans to release it in 2019.

Things now seem to have progressed as a tweet from Studio Ghibli’s production department has confirmed they have officially been reopened today and Miyazaki is at work on his new feature.

Whether that’s still a feature length version of “Boro the Caterpillar,” or something else is unclear.
