The problem is further compounded by Hadleigh's love of his family home and his native county, Yorkshire.

Bobby Kershaw, a once colourful and outspoken MP back-bencher, is about to publish his memoirs. These contain references to a political scandal of some years and implicate a brilliant young diplomat who is about to be appointed Ambassador in Washington. Despite pressure being put on Kershaw, Hadleigh advises him to publish and finds himself deeply involved.
