With “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” having become both the most acclaimed and successful movie at the box-office for the long-running action franchise, Paramount Pictures is doubling down on the formula that works.

To that end Variety reports that Christopher McQuarrie, who penned and directed both the fifth film (‘Rogue Nation’) and last year’s sixth entry, has signed a deal to return to write and direct the next two films.

In addition, the plan is for both films to be shot back-to-back (ala the last two “Avengers”). The seventh will premiere Summer 2021 and the eighth will hit in Summer 2022. The release in 2021/2022 also avoids conflict with Paramount and Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick” opening in 2020.

McQuarrie had been meeting for a handful of other projects lately including the Tom Clancy spin-off “Without Remorse”. McQuarrie will now look to start writing the two ‘Mission’ scripts while Cruise films “Top Gun: Maverick”. The studio aims to begin filming before year’s end.
