Fourth “Cloverfield” Still Heading To Cinemas
Paramount Pictures is reportedly still planning to release the WW2-set and currently titled “Overlord,” the fourth film in the “Cloverfield” franchise, later this year reports The Wrap.
The report comes hot on the heels of the unexpectedly sudden release of the third film, “The Cloverfield Paradox,” on Sunday immediately after the Superbowl. Reports came only about two weeks ago that Netflix had apparently picked up the $40 million sci-fi film and it was thought the service might announce the release date for the title during the game.
Instead, they shocked everyone with the game trailers confirming the film would hit the service within a few hours. The publicity stunt certainly got eyeballs and the one-off deal reportedly made the film immediately profitable for Paramount with Netflix spending over $50 million for the film while Paramount retains rights for China and home entertainment.
According to the trade, the film was deemed unsalvageable despite extensive reshoots to clarify elements and a strong cast. Thus producer J.J. Abrams, Paramount chief Jim Gianopulos, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos and Netflix’s original films head Scott Stuber hatched a plan for this one-off event.
The marketing stunt worked. Despite utterly terrible reviews, the film turned a profit for the studio and Netflix certainly got a lot of buzz and brand discussion out of the incident – even if a lot of it wasn’t flattering. It was a logical choice following Paramount and Netflix’s other recent collaboration which sees the Natalie Portman-led “Annihilation” skipping a global rollout next month in favour of a Netflix release outside North American and China who get it a few weeks earlier on February 23rd.
Paramount reportedly retains the rights to future “Cloverfield” instalments with the fourth one “Overlord” looking to go to cinemas. The film, starring Iain De Caestecker and Wyatt Russell, follows American paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day and soon realise their target of a Nazi-occupied village has succumbed to an experiment involving supernatural forces.
The film reportedly scored high in two recent test screenings and so its October 26th release in cinemas is looking more likely. Will people still be interested or did ‘Paradox’ damage the brand? We’ll have to wait and see.
