Paul Verhoeven took some major liberties with Robert Heinlein’s original sci-fi story “Starship Troopers,” turning its pro-militarism and nationalist agenda into a firm tongue-in-cheek skewering of fascism mixed with all his trademarks of raunch, violence and fun.

The film was followed up by several direct to video sequels, with a fifth entry on the way now – this one being an animated feature titled “Traitor of Mars” and boasting the voice talents of Casper Van Dien and Dina Meyer who will reprise their roles from the first film, while the original’s writer Ed Neumeier has penned the script.

In the film, Johnny Rico (Van Dien) has just been demoted and sent to a small satellite station on Mars whilst the Federation attacks the bugs’ home planet. While trying to train his new recruits on this remote quiet station, the bugs show up in a surprise attack but the Federation’s Fleet is too far away to help. It’s up to Rico and his Troopers to save the planet and uncover how the bugs made it so close to home.

The animated “Starship Troopers” film will also be coming to the big screen on Monday, August 21st for one night only via Fathom Events. Each showing will also feature a special introduction by Neumeier and Van Dien, with tickets to go on sale June 19th.
