The fan theory claims Sean Connery's former British secret service agent Captain John Patrick Mason is actually 007.

Connery reportedly once joked that he loved how The Rock gave him a final chance to play James Bond again. But could his comments have been more literal than anyone realised?

In Bay's second (and best) feature film, Connery's "John Mason" spent three decades as an off-the-books prisoner of the US after being accused of spying on them during the '60s.

Described in the film as "lethal" and "a trained killer", Mason's status as a one-time Bond would certainly support a second theory - that the James Bond name and 007 moniker are codenames used by a series of MI6's top agents.

John Mason might be the real name of Connery's "Bond" - they certainly draw from the same pool of quips, with Connery borrowing a Diamonds Are Forever line when he first meets Nicolas Cage's character. "I'm Stanley Goodspeed." "But of course you are."

What do you think? Did Bay plan a link between The Rock and Bond? Or is this just glass spheres of poison gas in the sky?
