The film takes place in both 1927 and 1977.

Cast
Production

Todd Haynes directed Wonderstruck based on an adapted screenplay by Brian Selznick, who also wrote the
novel of the same name.

Haynes was involved as director by May 2015 with Christine Vachon producing under her Killer Films banner.

In November 2015, Julianne Moore had been cast in the film, with Pamela Koffler and John Sloss joining as producers.

In April 2016, Jaden Michael, Cory Michael Smith, Michelle Williams, Oakes Fegley, and Amy Hargreaves joined the cast of the film.

In May 2016, James Urbaniak joined the cast.

Among those cast was Millicent Simmonds, a deaf actor from Utah. Deadline.com reported, "The 13-year-old Simmonds... will play Rose, whose half of Wonderstruck will be presented as a silent film in both a nod to movie history and an aesthetic designed to capture her perspective.

In addition, this section of the narrative will see an unprecedented number of deaf actors in roles that would normally go to hearing actors."

The film was met with a three minute standing ovation following its premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review writing : "Alive with the magic of pictures and the mysteries of silence, this is an uncommonly grownup film about children, communication, connection and memory."

David Ehrlich of Indiewire.com also gave the film a positive review writing : "A soul-stirring and fiercely uncynical film.

The 'Wonderstruck' Trailer Song Is A David Bowie Classic That Really Sets The Tone

While the score of the film itself will be composed by Carter Burwell (who earned a Best Original Score nomination for his work on Haynes' Carol) the Wonderstruck trailer is set to a recognizable piece of popular music: David Bowie's 1969 single "Space Oddity."

The lyrics of Ziggy Stardust's anthem to space travel are an oddly wonderful fit for the kaleidoscope imagery on display in the trailer. "This is ground control to Major Tom," the song begins — sung in the trailer by a chorus of children — making it clear that Wonderstruck will be something of a cosmic voyage that transcends both time and space. "Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare," Bowie croons later in the song, seemingly encouraging the film's young protagonists to leave the nest and set off on their journey of self-discovery.
