Review The Lord of the Rings (1978)

This was the movie that got me into reading Lord of the Rings. I'd read and enjoyed The Hobbit but baulked at the length of Lord of the Rings. I had a friend who had been at me to read it and he dragged me to the movie. Once I'd seen it I understood why he was so keen and settled in to read the...

    I'd still totally watch that.

    Review Terminator 3

One positive thing about Genesys is that it basically confirms your separate timelines theory. So you can feel free to include or ignore any of the sequels as you like. Just pick the universe where your preferred entries are the only ones that occurred.

    Review Alien Resurrection (1997)

I've always enjoyed this one. It's interesting looking back now at what are obviously Joss Whedon's first draft of the Firefly crew.

    Fun Star Trek: Voyager

Can you imagine if they'd had the guts to do the year of hell as a full season and didn't reset everything at the end. It might have been depressing but I think it could have been awesome too.

Dr Evans? Who did the Master disguise himself as in Time-Flight? (Bonus points if you can explain why he needed a disguise :))

    Fun The STAR WARS Franchise

I still have memories of my parents taking me to the drive-in at age 7 to see the original Star Wars. There was a pre-feature with another movie/short which had a scene of some people having to hang glide into a canyon area for some spy mission (I still have no idea what that movie was). My...

Man I wish they'd included that outfit for Leia in the movie.

Review Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

That's because it was adapted from a script for a 42 minute episode. It probably could have benefited from some kind of additional sub-plot to fill it out more. But it's always disappointed me that between the poor reception of this one and the wildly popular Wrath of Khan, the movies got pushed...

Review Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

I always enjoyed this one. It's got a high emotional impact, watching McCoy unravel with Spock's mind in his head and Kirk losing his son. And watching the original Enterprise get destroyed was extremely sad.

Review Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

I remember watching the Voyager episode where Janeway and Tuvok travelled through Tuvok's memory into his time serving under Captain Sulu and thinking that a series with the Excelsior and Sulu could have been tremendously successful.

    Review Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

The Shinzon/Romulan plot was good but the B4 storyline was unnecessary. If you've made the decision to kill off a main cast member, don't chicken out and write an obvious "undo" clause into the script. Let the character die and, if it's necessary to bring them back for a later movie, do it in...

    Review Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

I enjoyed it. It's still one of my favourites. But I do agree that it did feel a bit like a big budget extended episode. But, for me personally, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Review Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

Plus, a big reason for the emotional power of Wrath of Khan is the fact that, by the time of that movie the crew had been together for many years with the full 5 year mission behind them plus potentially a second 5 year mission after the first movie (if you accept that theory). The relationships...

    Review Star Trek (2009)

It was an enjoyable movie but it suffered from the same challenge that superhero origin stories have. The characters aren't yet the ones we know and love. I wasn't a fan of the idea of a new timeline idea but it worked in the context of the movie. I also wasn't keen on the characterisation of...

Fun Star Trek: The Animated Series

I've always felt that there was a lot of potential for these episodes to be adapted for a live action series. Or even expanded upon for a movie. After the rebooted movies started I wanted to see a movie based on Beyond the Farthest Star. It would need some significant adaptation but imagine a...

    Fun Star Trek: Voyager

I enjoyed it when I first watched it, but in hindsight it was disappointing how quickly the two crews became one happy Starfleet family and how pristine the ship remained without any access to major maintenance facilities. There could have been a little more conflict (other than the stuff that...

Review Captain America: Civil War (2016)

I loved it but having watched it a couple of times now its occurred to me that the MCU has reached a point where its becoming harder to introduce new viewers without them needing to see prior movies. I think they did a fair job of making this accessible to new viewers but there's a lot that...
