Alpha is an upcoming American historical drama film directed by Albert Hughes and written by Dan Wiedenhaupt.

The film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Leonor Varela and Jens Hultén. It is scheduled to be released by Columbia Pictures on March 2, 2018.


Plot

After a hunting expedition 20,000 years ago in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period goes awry, a young caveman struggles against the elements to find his way home all the while developing a friendship with a wolf.

Production

Development

The film was first announced on 15 September 2015, with Albert Hughes being confirmed as the director.

It will be produced by the production company Studio 8, and will also be their first film. It will use the IMAX 3D format.

Casting was finalised on February 19, 2016.

Kodi Smit-McPhee was confirmed to have joined the cast on 12 November 2015.

Principal Production

Filming has begun in both Vancouver and Drumheller.

A large set was built in Boundary Road near East Kent Avenue in Vancouver.

Some filming also took place in the city of Burnaby.

Later filming will take place in Iceland.

Filming in Vancouver began on February 22nd and is scheduled to end on May 20.

Filming was also done at Dinosaur Provincial Park near Patricia Alberta in April 2016.

The film is under investigation after five Alberta Bison were allegedly killed to be used in the film.

Post Production

In June 2017, the film was entitled from The Solutrean to Alpha and its release date was pushed back from September 15, 2017 to March 2nd 2018 in order to potentially cash in on the spring break teen crowd.
