Banks reveals the project is NOT a reboot, but in fact a continuation which incorporates the events of both the original 1970s TV series and the McG-directed films in the 2000s. In this take camera-shy Charles Townsend, who was rich enough in 1976 to hire his first elite all-women crime-fighting team, is now so super rich he’s begun his own global spy agency.
That expanded roster includes the crew at the center of the new story: the hard-partying, highly skilled wild card Sabina Wilson (Kristen Stewart); the ex-MI6 muscle bound Jane Kano (Ella Balinska), and the MIT-trained scientist Elena Houghlin (Aladdin’s Naomi Scott) who serves as the heart of the movie.
Banks herself along with Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou will all play Bosley, a name which is “now a rank in the organization, like lieutenants” with Banks shown in one of the photos helping Stewart’s angel gear up for a mission.
Banks made it a point to make the film about women working together and supporting each other, so don’t expect romantic entanglements or calls to mothers. The story is set in locations including Istanbul, Hamburg, and Berlin and the approach to stunts and action will be much more grounded than the 2000s films with the tone aiming to be akin to the recent entries in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.
John Forsythe, who voiced Charlie Townsend in both the series and films, passed away in 2010. They’ve got a new voice which Banks says “will sound very familiar to you” but is also one who tries to emulate John Forsythe’s voice as best they could as “we want a real sense of continuity in the movie.”/
“Charlie’s Angels” opens November 15th.
