David Cronenberg Planning A TV Series

David Cronenberg is reportedly in the early stages of developing a TV series, the first time the “A History of Violence” and “Dead Ringers” director has created an episodic narrative.

Cronenberg himself revealed the news at the Venice Film Festival where he is being honored with a lifetime achievement award. Dubbed a long-form personal TV project, he wouldn’t go into any other specifics as he “can’t talk about it yet.”

Cronenberg, who has directed single TV episodes before, has made headlines in recent months for saying the collective moviegoing experience in cinemas is destined to die, but this week he also wants to make it clear that movie-making itself is evolving, not dying. He tells Variety:

“Today TV screens are getting bigger and bigger and therefore the difference between theatre and domestic viewing has become really flimsy. The rule used to be that closeup shots were only done for TV, and not for movies. But today that’s no longer the case.”

Cronenberg’s last directed feature was 2014’s “Maps to the Stars”.
