So much promise on hearing that Capaldi had bagged the part.

Then SERIES 8 happened, starting with this pile of drivel.

Doing a full rewatch of the Capaldi era would be a very sad prospect for me now, in retrospect.

I remember that he seemed to be struggling in these early episodes, with an "alien in a wrong way" character and being sidelined in the Tardis while Clara practiced having intense zero chemistry with the thespianic plank of wood known as Danny Pink.

Not a great start.

And I had no time for Moffat's seeming attempt at trying to kickstart a spin off show with the rubbish Silurian Madam Vastra, plus Jenny and the comedy Sontaran.

And T-Rex's could never swallow police boxes apparently.

The phone call from Matt Smith to reassure viewers that Hey, the Doctor can be old! was, I think, a sign of a lack of confidence in the direction they had taken. They shouldn't have worried about Capaldi's age and instead concentrated on giving him great scripts rather than propping up their rubbish one with an intrusive and slightly insulting cameo to reassure people.

Rubbish.
