Fukunaga, Lowery Team For “Explorers” Series
Acclaimed filmmakers Cary Fukunaga (“True Detective: Season One”) and David Lowery (“The Old Man and the Gun”) are teaming to write a pilot script at Paramount Television.
Said script will be a series remake of the beloved 1985 Joe Dante-directed coming-of-age sci-fi feature “Explorers” which starred Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix.
The story follows a boy obsessed with 1950s sci-fi movies who has a recurring dream about a blueprint of some kind. He draws it for his inventor friend and with the help of a third pal, they end up building a spaceship.
Fukunaga and Lowery will write the script and bible for the series with one of them to direct the pilot should it go forward. Fukunaga is next directing the new James Bond film and Lowery just signed for “The Green Knight”.
Both have TV experience with Fukunaga recently helming the entire first season of Netflix’s “Maniac,” while Lowery directed the first two episodes of CBS All Access’ recently renewed “Strange Angel”.
The pair will executive produce alongside Hayden Kiessling, James Johnston, Toby Halbrooks and the original film’s screenwriter Erik Luke.
