Making it onto many best of year lists last year was Ari Aster’s intense horror tale “Hereditary” which also became a big hit for distributor A24. Now he follows up that stylish debut feature effort with this project which sounds like a spin on “The Wicker Man”. Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor star as a couple visiting a friend (Will Poulter) in his Swedish rural hometown for a mid-summer festival, but instead find themselves forced into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition by a pagan cult. A24 have confidence in this, having set aside an early August release date for the film.

“Midsommar” Is ‘Wizard of Oz For Perverts’

After the massive critical success and strong commercial success of “Hereditary,” a lot of people are keeping an eye on filmmaker Ari Aster’s next project “Midsommar”.

In a new interview with Vulture, Aster says those expected “Hereditary 2” will be disappointed as this isn’t as much an outright horror film even if it gets unsettling and macabre at points.

The project has previously been dubbed ‘Scandinavian folk horror’ focusing on a ‘pagan cult’ and, combined with the vague first trailer, has led to obvious “The Wicker Man” comparisons. Appearing at the Metrograph Anniversary Party this week, he was asked how it compares to “Hereditary” he replied:

“It’s a breakup movie, in the same way that Hereditary is a family tragedy. It’s less overtly a horror movie, but it’s still working in that same space. It’s very macabre. But people shouldn’t go in expecting Hereditary.”

Then asked “Is it your Mamma Mia?” to which he laughingly replied: “Yeah, sure, I’d say so. It’s a Wizard of Oz for perverts.” Aster also agreed that Toni Collette should have won an Oscar for her “Hereditary” performance, but understands the snub: “Of course, she was snubbed. It’s a horror film – and those are kind of traditionally maligned by the industry.”

“Midsommar” is set to hit cinemas on August 9th.

Midsommar

A24 has moved up “Hereditary” director Ari Aster’s follow-up film “Midsommar” by a month from August 9th to July 3rd. The new date puts it up against “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” but has also proven a hit date for horror films in recent years. Jack Reynor and Florence Pugh play a couple traveling through Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
