Following the teaser clips earlier this week, EW has posted a new story on The CW’s Arrowverse crossover for this year including a new photo of Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman......

In the mixed-up Elseworlds timeline of the three episode run, The Flash (Grant Gustin), Arrow (Stephen Amell) and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) team up to go to Gotham City. While they won’t see Batman, they will deal with Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Rose’s Batwoman.

It has been revealed then our trio of regular heroes visit Arkham Asylum to see doctor John Deegan (Jeremy Davies), this leads to Batwoman’s first appearance with her using her grapple hook and Batarang to stop two inmates attempting to escape from the facility and saving Arrow and Cisco in the process.

That does not mean she welcomes them. Rose says: “Kate does not want to deal with this. She has a whole other agenda, a whole other life that she’s trying to sort out right now, and these frigging superheroes come in and they’re a mess, and they need her help.”

The episodes serve as a backdoor introduction to her own potential future series on the network. Speaking about her role, Rose says: “It’s a strange feeling to put on a suit like this that has been custom made for you knowing that it’s going to transform you into a character that does amazing things. You feel very empowered and it just instantly changes everything you feel in that moment.”

Of the character, consulting producer Marc Guggenheim says: “She’s a lot like Batman in the sense that she’s kind of a dick. Ruby’s amazing. She brings such a different color and tone. She will interact with our heroes both as Batwoman and as Kate Kane, so you’ll see both sides of that character and that performance.”

Kate Kane and her Batwoman persona are quite different as well indicates Rose: “[Kate] is more fun because she’s a billionaire, she has ladies that love her. I think, for the most part crossover-wise, she’s swaggy. She always knew who she was, but she’s really coming into knowing who she is in the crossover, and with Batwoman as well. It’s not the first time she’s put on the suit.”

The ‘Elseworlds’ crossover begins Sunday, December 9th and continues over the next three nights.

Speaking with EW, Gustin says it’s a life-swap story as opposed to a body-swap one (ala “Freaky Friday”) so don’t expect out of character acting:

“You’re not going to see me playing Oliver Queen’s mannerisms, or Stephen playing Barry’s mannerisms. It’s more being aware that for some reason we’ve switched lives and destinies. It’s more the fun of the situational comedy that we keep finding ourselves in, and less us having a complete role reversal. We get to see Stephen do some of the more goofy speed stuff I have to do on a regular basis, and I get some actual combat as Green Arrow. So, we just see different colors for each of us.”

Batman Explained

The biggest new element this time is the inclusion of Batwoman (Ruby Rose) who will patrol the streets of Gotham City which will be where the majority of the annual crossover will be set. Gotham has yet to be seen in this incarnation of the DC Universe, and it has been revealed this will be a Gotham City where Batman hasn’t been seen for three years.

With his absence, the city has become a crime-infested wasteland, and executive producer Caroline Dries spoke with Entertainment Weekly and explains what that means:

“Our approach is: What does Gotham look like after the Batman has been gone for three years? So if you have the law and order, protector, and hope gone, what happens as a result? Some people are thriving in his absence because now they can start to do their own thing without the oversight. A lot of other people are suffering and they’re losing hope, and the city itself and infrastructure is falling apart. So it’s not a happy place. Our guys walk into a grimy, scary Gotham.”

Former “Arrow” showrunner Marc Guggenheim, who is acting as showrunner of this crossover, says:

“It’s a dead city. The way I sort of described it to Stephen is, it’s there but for the grace of God goes Star City. It’s the worst case scenario. The reason no one talks about Gotham is the city might as well be dead. It’s practically a ghost town.”

That doesn’t mean those involved can’t have fun and once Kara, Barry, and Oliver set foot in the city there’s some gun to be had as in this universe Oliver Queen things Batman is a myth, a hoax just to scare the citizens while all Barry Allen wants to do is meet Batman and get a photo.

CW’s 2019 Crossover: “Crisis On Infinite Earths”

The CW has announced that the iconic comic book storyline “Crisis On Infinite Earths” will serve as the story for their next DC series crossover in Fall 2019.

Said storyline has been specifically teased throughout much of “The Flash” throughout its run so far and the announcement was made following “Elseworlds, Part 3,” the third and final installment of this year’s crossover which aired tonight.

Upon the announcement, Stephem Amell shared the official logo on his social media feed. Though not confirmed, it’s expected that once again all four series – “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow” will be involved. It could even go bigger if “Batwoman” is greenlit.

That differs from this year as ‘Legends’ sat things out to deal with their own problems as John Constantine (Matt Ryan) broke reality trying to save his boyfriend Desmond Laveau from damnation.

CW Teases “Crisis” Event & More DC Shows

The CW ended its DC Arrowverse crossover ‘Elseworlds’ late last year with the unprecedented announcement of their plans for Fall 2019’s version – an adaptation of the famed comic storyline “Crisis on Infinite Earths”.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Thursday afternoon, CW president Mark Pedowitz vowed the event: “will be the biggest and most complicated [crossover yet].”

Could some characters from the likes of “Arrow,” “The Flash” and “Supergirl” die like they do in the comics? He says: “That is the intent, to take some big swings. Can’t tell you if it’ll follow the comic book version, but it’ll take some big swings… We’re talking about a number of different ways to go. It is ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ and if you know the history, things collapse.”

“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” famously sat out the 2018 crossover and asked if it would return for the next one, he says he didn’t know yet but he hopes so. Not asked, but highly likely is that the crossover will result in the incorporation of “Supergirl” into the same version of Earth as that in which all the other DC shows take place.

With a “Batwoman” series also in the works for next season, bringing the total to six DC Comics-inspired shows on The CW, Pedowitz believes there’s still room for more: “We haven’t hit that saturation point in my mind… Things will age and we want to get the next generation of shows to keep The CW DC universe going for as long as possible.”
