“Greatest American Hero” Remake Tries Again

ABC has handed out a put pilot commitment for a half-hour single-camera re-imagining of Steven J. Cannell’s 1981 cult classic series “The Greatest American Hero”.

The key change with the new version is that the titular hero won’t be a curly haired blond white man named Ralph (William Katt), but rather a Cleveland-born 30-year-old Indian-American woman named Meera.

Like the original, aliens entrust her with a super suit to protect the planet, and the world has never been in more unreliable hands. Two previous attempts were made in recent years to revive the property, neither came to fruition.

20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios are behind this version with “Fresh Off the Boat” writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom along with Cannell’s daughter Tawnia McKiernan, Mandy Summers and Nahnatchka Khan all set to executive produce.

Dungey confirms to Slashfilm that they’re still developing a reboot of the classic 1980s superhero comedy series “The Greatest American Hero” with this incarnation starring an Indian American woman. “Fresh off the Boat” showrunner Nahnatchka Khan is behind that project.

I'm still okay with the change up from a Nazi poster boy to a woman of color. My only fear is the fact that Katt was obviously bumbling his way through superherodom, and seeing a woman in that position will A) cause feminists to reconsider thinking it was a good idea to change the gender, and B) will just give masculinists cause to point out how a woman could never be a hero (never mind that Wonder Woman proved otherwise, but I'm sure they'd just say she's a Mary Sue, because it's one of those alt-Reich catchphrases, like "SJW" and "snowflake" - they have to use those catchphrases, or they lose their Fox News decoder rings and their parking spaces at the NRA meeting place).

Over on ABC, the network is moving forward with its reboot of “The Greatest American Hero”. In the new take, a single-camera half-hour comedy format, the story follows an Indian-American woman from Cleveland whose only real skill is partying. She becomes entrusted with an extraterrestrial super suit to protect the planet.

“Fresh Off the Boat” writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom penned the pilot and executive produces alongside Nahnatchka Khan, Mandy Summers and Tawnia McKiernan.

Hannah Simone Is “The Greatest American Hero”

Hannah Simone (“New Girl”) has scored the title role in ABC’s single-camera comedy pilot reimagining of 1981 TV cult classic “The Greatest American Hero”.

The new take comes from “Fresh Off the Boat” pair Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan and features a gender switch of the lead protagonist with William Katt’s white male switched out for an Indian-American woman.

Simone plays Meera, a thirty-year-old woman who loves tequila and karaoke and has spent her life searching and failing to find meaning, much to the chagrin of her traditional Indian-American family.

An inexplicable event occurs that will change the course of her life forever: she is entrusted with a super suit to protect the planet. Meera may have finally found purpose, but the world has never been in more unreliable hands.

Fruchbom, Khan, Tawnia McKiernan and Mandy Summers will executive produce.

George Wendt (“Cheers”), Gia Sandhu (“The Indian Detective”) and Zenobia Shroff (“The Big Sick”) are set to co-star opposite Hannah Simone in the ABC single-camera comedy pilot “The Greatest American Hero”.

Christine Gernon (“Speechless”) has been tapped to direct the pilot which reimagines the story and now centers it around an Indian-American woman and party girl who is entrusted with a super suit to protect the planet. “Fresh Off the Boat” creators Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan will executive produce.
