Amazon has announced a Friday July 28th premiere for its new original one-hour series “The Last Tycoon” based on “The Great Gatsby” author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final work.

Inspired by the life of legendary film mogul Irving Thalberg, the story is set during the Great Depression and the rise of Germany and follows Matt Boomer as Hollywood’s new golden boy producer Monroe Stahr who battles with his mentor Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer) for the soul of their studio.

Lily Collins, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jennifer Beals, Enzo Cilenti, Dominique McElligott, Saul Rubinek and Eion Bailey also star. Billy Ray (“Captain Phillips,” “Shattered Glass”) writes and directs multiple episodes and the series is executive produced by Ray and Christopher Keyser (“Tyrant”).

The pilot episode is available now with the remaining eight episodes of the first season to be available at launch exclusively on Prime Video on July 28th.

Amazon Cancels “Last Tycoon” After One Season

Amazon does not seem to be a fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald as they have just cancelled their Matt Bomer-led pricey period drama series based on his unfinished novel “The Last Tycoon” after one season.

The decision comes days after the corporate giant reversed a previous decision and axed the renewed “Z: The Beginning of Everything,” a Christian Ricci-led series which followed Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda.

‘Tycoon’ was picked up for nine episodes last year and began streaming on Amazon on July 28th. Kelsey Grammer and Lily Collins also starred in the series which dealt with the Hollywood studio system in the 1930s and scored only mixed reviews.

The decisions are part of a larger strategy change at Amazon to try and find a large-scale hit, and leads to the immediate question – what else is getting the chop?
