When Victorian Clara appeared I was pleased that we might - finally - get a companion from some other era rather than the present day.

Found on the IMDb trivia, so take it with a grain of salt:
"The original concept for the new companion was that she would be a Victorian governess named Beryl. Over the next few months, however, the production team reconsidered the difficulty of writing for a regular character who was more than a century behind the viewing audience."

Funny, the classic writers had no problem with it when they wrote Jamie. An important question, then: Were the other writers just better craftsmen or are the modern writers lazy? (Short answer: Both)
