HBO Greenlights “Thrones” Prequel Pilot

next-thrones-ep-leaks-but-not-from-hackers-696x464.jpg

In the midst of production of the final season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” the network has announced that they have greenlit one of the five pilots they’ve been working on for a spin-off series.

The successful one is penned by author and co-executive producer George R.R. Martin and writer Jane Goldman. Credits wise this spin-off will be created by Goldman and Martin and written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin.

The project will be a prequel, set thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. The series will explore the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history, the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, and the Starks of legend.

Goldman is serving as showrunner and will executive produce alongside Martin as well as Vince Gerardis and co-creator/executive producer Daniel Zelman. The project is presently untitled.

Martin Offers Updates On “Thrones” Series

martin-offers-updates-on-thrones-series-696x464.jpg

Author George R.R. Martin has returned to the online blogging world where he takes time out from his schedule to offer a status update on HBO’s various “Game of Thrones” prequel series in development.

The other week came word that the network was moving forward with one of the five or so in development, the one penned by Jane Goldman and Martin himself. In the new post on his official site, Martin confirms three of the others are still under consideration and one is outright dead:

“Yes, this is a prequel, not a sequel. None of the characters or actors from ‘Game of Thrones’ will appear in the new show…This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before ‘Game of Thrones’ (like ‘Dunk & Egg’), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long).

We’re very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don’t have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title. (My vote would be ‘The Long Night,’ which says it all, but I’d be surprised if that’s where we end up. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase “Game of Thrones” in there somewhere. We’ll know sooner or later).

As for the other successor shows… if you have been following along, you know that we started with four, and eventually went to five. One of those has been shelved, I am given to understand, and of course Jane’s pilot is now moving to film. But that does not mean the others are dead.

Three more ‘Game of Thrones’ prequels, set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development. Everything I am told indicates that we could film at least one more pilot, and maybe more than one, in the years to come. We do have an entire world and tens of thousands of years of history to play with, after all. But this is television, so nothing is certain.”

Martin adds that his sixth novel, “The Winds of Winter,” remains his top priority.

Martin adds that his sixth novel, “The Winds of Winter,” remains his top priority.

If that is so, why is he piddling about expanding the universe into projects that will take him away from it, with the probable result that he will be dead before he can conclude the original THRONES book saga itself?

I get a sense of a man who has been seduced by... something, whether it be greed or something else - and that he has perhaps seriously lost his way and his focus.

Put the phone off the hook, stop blogging, tell Jane Goldman to get lost, and finish up what you started, sir. Not drone on about that "fourth or fifth" spin-off series that nobody sane will want and that people will turn their noses up at, due to over-saturation of product.

Naomi Watts Leads “Game of Thrones” Prequel

Naomi Watts has been announced as one of the stars of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series pilot. Specifics of her character are under wraps, but she has been said to play a “charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

Taking place thousands of years before the events of ‘Thrones,’ the project hails from beloved scribe Jane Goldman and chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Martin with Watts’ hiring the first announced piece of casting.

Martin, Goldman, Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, and Vince Gerardis will executive produce. Watts is not averse to TV and recently starred in David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” revival.

Josh Whitehouse Joins HBO’s “Thrones” Prequel

“Poldark” actor Josh Whitehouse has scored a key role in the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel spin-off series on HBO.

There are no details on the character he’s playing other than it’s a key one, but it is NOT the central male lead. He marks the second bit of casting on the series following yesterday’s news that Naomi Watts will star.

The untitled series takes place thousands of years before the events of ‘Thrones; and will chronicle the end of the Age of Heroes.

Jane Goldman and author George R.R. Martin created the series with Goldman to serve as showrunner. HBO has also denied a recent report suggesting “The Long Night” will be the show’s title, the series is currently untitled even though “The Long Night” is said to be Martin’s personal favourite choice.

Whitehouse will soon be seen in the remake of “Valley Girl” taking on the role Nicolas Cage made famous in the original.

Martin Talks “Thrones” Prequel Series Timeline

martin-talks-thrones-prequel-series-timeline-696x464.jpg

It is already known that the in development “Game of Thrones” prequel spin-off series will get around continuity issues by being set several millennia into the past. Just how many thousands of years isn’t clear, but author and show creator George R.R. Martin has offered some new insights on the timeline.

Speaking to EW, he revealed many of the key elements of ‘Thrones’ will be gone from the prequel including locations, dynasties and certain species of beasts:

“‘10,000 years’ is mentioned in the novels. But you also have places where maesters say, ‘No, no, it wasn’t 10,000, it was 5,000.’ . . . So I think it’s closer to 5,000 years. Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series. [Jane Goldman] is a tremendous talent.”

A premiere date has yet to be set for the first prequel, but casting has begun. The eighth and final season of the main series will premiere April 2019 on HBO.

British acting legend Miranda Richardson (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Merlin,” “Damage”) has reportedly scored a series regular role in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel spin-off pilot.

Richardson joins Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackle, Denise Gough and others on the series created by Jane Goldman and author George R.R. Martin. Goldman will serve as showrunner.

Richardson will appear in Amazon Studios’ “Good Omens” this spring.

Five More Join “Game of Thrones” Prequel

Marquis Rodriguez (“Marvel’s Iron Fist”), John Simm (“Doctor Who”), Richard McCabe (“Peaky Blinders”), John Heffernan (“Ripper Street”) and Dixie Egerickx (“The Little Stranger”) have all been cast in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot.

S.J. Clarkson will helm the episode with the five joining already announced regulars Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo.

Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin created the spin-off set thousands of years before the events of ‘Thrones’ and chronicling the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. Goldman is serving as showrunner and will executive produce alongside Martin.

The news comes as HBO has announced “The Last Watch,” a two-hour documentary about the making of the final season of “Game of Thrones,” will premiere May 26th – one week after the series finale.

For a year, acclaimed British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay was embedded on the set of the hit series and chronicled the creation of the show’s most ambitious and complicated season.
