Controversial Trump

This is the same guy who half-ass-but-not-really apologized for the Entertainment Tonight "Pussy Grabber" tape last year (less an apology and more of a "It was locker room talk and why were you recording it anyway, I'm the victim!"), but now is claiming the tape is fake. He can't tell the truth, ever, and his followers buy every line of his bullshit. Hell, it's gotten to the point that when they can't justify his actions, they just fall back on the tired old "Let's just mention Hillary and Obama, because that's what Fox News does!"

But hey, at least we have a "president" who tells it like it is and isn't PC, right?

Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-recognize-jerusalem-israels-capital-020407741.html

Washington (AFP) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday recognized the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital -- a historic decision that overturns decades of US policy and risks triggering a fresh spasm of violence in the Middle East.

"I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Trump said from the White House.

"It's the right thing to do."

The declaration calls into question seven decades of deliberate diplomatic ambiguity about the final status of a holy city vociferously claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians.

Trump also kicked off the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, making good on a campaign promise dear to evangelical Christian and right wing Jewish voters -- as well as donors.

He said his decision marked the start of a "new approach" to solving the thorny conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Trump's predecessors -- from Bill Clinton to George Bush -- made similar promises on the campaign trail, but quickly reneged upon taking office, and the burden of war and peace.

This most unlikely of presidents, who came to office with no foreign policy experience and denouncing experts, was determined to show his arrival in Washington spells the end of business as usual.

"Many presidents have said they want to do something and they didn't do it," Trump said in the hours leading up to his historic address.

"Whether it's courage or they changed their mind, I can't tell you," he said. "I think it's long overdue."

- Outrage -

The announcement leaves many angry US allies and leaders across the Middle East trying to find a measured response and hoping that the tinderbox region is not destined for yet another round of bloodletting.

Pope Francis joined a list of leaders warning of an historic misstep that could trigger a surge of violence.

"I cannot silence my deep concern over the situation that has emerged in recent days," the pontiff said Wednesday, one day after speaking by phone with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

The pontiff added that maintaining Jerusalem's status quo was important "in order to avoid adding new elements of tension to an already volatile world that is wracked by so many cruel conflicts."

In a frantic series of calls, the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the European Union, France, Germany and Turkey also warned Trump against the move.

- Three 'days of rage' -

Moving the US embassy will probably take years to implement, but the repercussions of Trump's decision are likely to be swift.

Hundreds of Palestinians burned US and Israeli flags as well as pictures of Trump in the Gaza Strip, while relatively small clashes erupted near the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron.

The Palestinian armed Islamist movement Hamas has threatened to launch a new "intifada," or uprising.

Palestinians called for three days of protests -- or "days of rage" -- starting Wednesday.

Anticipating protests, US government officials and their families were ordered to avoid Jerusalem's Old City and the West Bank, though the situation remained largely calm Wednesday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the main pan-Islamic body, in Istanbul on December 13 "to display joint action among Islamic countries" over Jerusalem.

"Such a step will only play into the hands of terror groups," Erdogan said at a joint news conference in Ankara after talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

Jordan and the Palestinians also called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League in Cairo.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refrained from commenting on the issue on Wednesday in his first speech since Trump's plan was confirmed.

- Peace still possible, US says -

Most of the international community does not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, insisting the issue can only be resolved in negotiations.

The White House argues the move would not prejudge final talks and would represent the reality that west Jerusalem is and will continue to be part of Israel under any settlement.

Critics say Trump's approach could extinguish his own efforts to broker Middle East peace while igniting the flames of conflict in a region already reeling from crises in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Qatar.

Israel seized the largely Arab eastern sector of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, claiming both sides of the city as its capital.

The Palestinians want the eastern sector as the capital of their future state.

Trump was pushed to act on the embassy as a result of the a 1995 law, which stated that the city "should be recognized as the capital of the state of Israel" and the US embassy be moved there.

A waiver has been invoked by successive US presidents, postponing the move on grounds of "national security" once every six months, meaning the law has never taken effect.

Several peace plans have unravelled in the past decades over the issue of how to divide sovereignty or oversee holy sites in Jerusalem.

President Trump Xmas carols;

Jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride a one horse open sleigh,
Except I never said it's a one horse open sleigh,
That's fake news, it's not even two or three horses,
It's a million horse one with gold bells on,
Which jingle louder than yours losers!

Rudolph the red nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose,
The other reindeers laughed and called him names,
They were right, Lapland is sending us bad reindeer,
They do crime and drugs, how do you think Rudolph got a red nose?
These fake reindeer will be no more when that wall is built,
Happy Xmas from the greatest president of all time.

The fake news won't tell you this...I'll tell you this. Those elves - they're rapists, candy-addicts...some of them are good people. But they're taking jobs from good, hard working Americans! And where was Santa born? When will we get to see the birth certificate? What is Santa hiding?"

What with that infant's name? Why not an American one ...like Donald

Following up my success in uniting the whole Middle East in hatred over Jerusalem, in the new year I shall be announcing the relocation of the capital of The United States to Moscow. It makes sense folks Get Real!
The U.N. would prefer a two state solution whereby the U.S.A. and Russia remain separate, but what do they know. Losers, and the State Department have all their addresses!
As my number one twitter fan says;

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus beneath the mistletoe last night,
She didn't see me creep,
Down the stairs to have peep,
Santa then went Xmas shopping boosted by my bigly tax cuts,
So I moved on Mommy and grabbed her by the ****,
Santa doesn't get a look in now,
Pathetic loser,
I'm a magnet.

A MESSAGE FROM.VLADIMIR PUTIN;
Happy Xmas to you all.
Special thank you to my pal Donald from D.C. What a great year it has been for you, but especially for Russia. Thanks!
Let me say how ridiculous it is that the western media keep alleging that I interfere in elections or popular votes like Brexit. Nonsense. Which reminds me, thank you to the fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars for voting me their player of 2017, and for the audience of Dancing With The Stars for voting me the winner of the latest series.
I really respect your free elections, in Russia we also have a presidential vote coming up.
My opponent Mr Ivan Soontobeinjailov will like me wait eagerly as the votes are counted , before I'm declared the winner.
Unfortunately I can't meet all of you, all my devoted fans around the world, but maybe my army will spread my love for you in years to come as it visits all major western cities in a mission of goodwill after the upcoming collapse of The West.
I look forward to visiting Washington D.C. soon to be renamed Putingrad.
Merry Xmas. Dasvidaniya

The area is disputed as to who controls it, who owns it? A decision to claim it as a capital will cause violence? Truthfully I understand little even after watching the news reports. What good is the U.S. recognition since other countries oppose it?

Trump Disbands Commission on Voter Fraud

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/03/us/politics/trump-voter-fraud-commission.html

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Wednesday abruptly shut down a White House commission he had charged with investigating voter fraud, ending a brief quest for evidence of election theft that generated lawsuits, outrage and some scholarly testimony, but no real evidence that American elections are corrupt.

Mr. Trump did not acknowledge the commission’s inability to find evidence of fraud, but cast the closing as a result of continuing legal challenges.

“Despite substantial evidence of voter fraud, many states have refused to provide the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity with basic information relevant to its inquiry,” Mr. Trump said in a White House statement.

“Rather than engage in endless legal battles at taxpayer expense, today I signed an executive order to dissolve the commission, and have asked the Department of Homeland Security to review these issues and determine next courses of action,” he said.

In fact, no state has uncovered significant evidence to support the president’s claim, and election officials, including many Republicans, have strongly rejected it.

Mr. Trump established the commission after his repeated insistence, without credible evidence, that widespread voter fraud explained how Hillary Clinton received about 2.9 million more votes while he won the presidency in the Electoral College.

It is an issue that continues to resonate with his base voters, and Mr. Trump has mentioned it in recent rallies, but there have been few Republicans in Congress who have followed him.

The closing of the commission was a blow for Kris Kobach, the secretary of state of Kansas and the panel’s vice chairman. Mr. Kobach was one of a few state officials to support Mr. Trump’s contention of widespread fraud.

But Mr. Kobach insisted in an interview that the commission’s work would not end but rather would be transferred to the Department of Homeland Security, one of the federal agencies charged with ensuring election integrity and one that he said critics would find more difficult to target.

As a White House commission, the voter-fraud panel was subject to public-disclosure requirements and other restrictions that Mr. Kobach said opponents of the inquiry had seized on in “a determined effort by the left” to hamstring its investigation. At last count, he said, the panel faced at least eight lawsuits accusing it of ignoring various federal requirements, including one from a commission member, Matthew Dunlap, the Maine secretary of state, that claimed he had been illegally excluded from its deliberations.

“It got to the point where the staff of the commission was spending more time responding to litigation than doing an investigation,” Mr. Kobach said. “Think of it as an option play; a decision was made in the middle of the day to pass the ball. The Department of Homeland Security is going to be able to move faster and more efficiently than a presidential advisory commission.”

A spokesman for homeland security, Tyler Q. Houlton, said on Wednesday that “the department continues to focus our efforts on securing elections against those who seek to undermine the election system or its integrity.”

“We will do this in support of state governments who are responsible for administering elections,” he added.

But states may well not cooperate with the department any more than they did with the panel.

As a first step, Mr. Kobach, who said he would remain as an informal adviser to homeland security, said the department would marshal its files on immigrants, legal and otherwise, so that they can be matched with lists of registered voters nationwide to detect foreign citizens who are illegally casting ballots in American elections. Both Mr. Trump and Mr. Kobach have insisted that voting by noncitizens is endemic — Mr. Trump falsely claimed that millions of illegal voters cost him a popular-vote victory in 2016 — but investigations, including ones by Mr. Kobach and the Justice Department under President George W. Bush, turned up scant evidence of fraud.

Many Democratic secretaries of state had said they believed the commission had a goal of laying the groundwork for restrictions that will mostly make it harder for traditional Democratic constituencies — minorities, young people and the poor — to cast ballots, which would benefit Republican candidates.

The commission had been seeking voluminous information on voters, including names, addresses, dates of birth, political affiliations and the last four digits of Social Security numbers, along with voting history. It also had requested records of felony convictions and whether voters are registered in other states.

But many states bar the release of even partial Social Security numbers or other personal information because that data can be used for identity theft.

The commission had faced a deadline days from now about how it would proceed. Vice President Mike Pence, who was tasked with running it, was never particularly excited about the idea, and several members of the commission had objected to working with Mr. Kobach, according to a White House official.

Another official said that the idea, which was supported by the president’s former chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, was destined to be shoved off on an agency. And on a day when Mr. Bannon was already under fire for disparaging comments he made in a new book about the presidency, aides put the blame for the existence of the commission on him and insisted he had supported it eagerly. As coverage of the book dominated headlines, the White House pushed out the news of the commission’s closing.

Groups that opposed the commission said its real mission was voter suppression, in ways that would help Republicans, and they were quick to declare victory.

“The commission’s entire purpose was to legitimize voter suppression,” said Vanita Gupta, the president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and former head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

“The abrupt abandonment of the commission makes clear that it had become a thoroughly discredited body that could not find evidence of mass voter fraud,” Ms. Gupta said. “The commission itself was unable to justify its existence as a result.”

In a telephone interview late Wednesday, Mr. Dunlap, a Democrat and a member of the panel who has consistently criticized the commission’s operations, said the White House’s decision to move the inquiry to the Department of Homeland Security was “utterly alarming.”

“Homeland security operates very much in the dark,” he said. “Any chance of having this investigation done in a public forum is now lost, and I think people should be, frankly, frightened by that.”

While the conduct of elections now rests with state officials, he said, “Secretary Kobach wants homeland security to make those decisions without public input. That’s the real threat from this decision.”

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer of New York, said in a statement that “the commission never had anything to do with election integrity. It was instead a front to suppress the vote, perpetrate dangerous and baseless claims, and was ridiculed from one end of the country to the other.”

Richard L. Hasen, a law professor and election law scholar at the University of California, Irvine, was sharply critical of the commission in a blog post.

“The commission was poorly organized and conceived,” he wrote.

He added, “It made rookie, boneheaded mistakes about handling documents used by the commission, again in violation of federal law. It did not seem to have an endgame.”

Donald Trump and his Nuclear Button

Trump Makes Clear His Nuclear Button is Bigger Than Kim’s

President Donald Trump dropped a rhetorical nuclear bomb on North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un on Twitter Tuesday night.

Kim Jong Un warned in his New Year’s address that he has a nuclear button on his desk and is ready to order a nuclear strike against the U.S. if threatened. Trump responded in turn Tuesday, reminding “Rocket Man” that he is challenging a far superior force.

Donald J. Trump

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!

Last year, North Korea tested five new ballistic missiles, including two intercontinental ballistic missiles that can theoretically range the continental U.S. The rogue state also tested successfully a staged thermonuclear weapon, a hydrogen bomb able to produce an explosive yield of potentially a few hundred kilotons.

North Korea has announced the completion of the state nuclear force, with Kim ordering mass production and rapid deployment of the state’s new weapons, but more testing will likely be required for North Korea to field a reliable nuclear deterrent against the U.S. and its allies in Asia.

The U.S. military has said on multiple occasions that it is more than ready to deal with the North Korean threat should it be called to action to defend regional peace and stability.

Trump administration to expand drilling off U.S. continental waters

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ng-off-all-u-s-waters/?utm_term=.c703da97cf2d

The Trump administration unveiled a controversial proposal Thursday to permit drilling in most U.S. continental shelf waters, including protected areas of the Arctic and the Atlantic, where oil and gas exploration is opposed by governors from New Jersey to Florida, nearly a dozen attorneys general, more than 100 U.S. lawmakers and the Defense Department.

Under the proposal, only one of 26 planning areas in the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean would be off limits to oil and gas exploration, according to Interior Department Secretary Ryan Zinke. He said the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management has identified 47 potential areas where industry companies can buy leases between 2019 and 2024, when the proposed period would begin and end.

The Draft Five Year Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program was embraced by oil and gas industry groups but is expected to face withering opposition from a wide range of state officials and conservationists. “Nothing is final,” Zinke said in remarks at a news conference. “This is a draft program. The states, local communities and congressional delegations will all have a say” before the proposal becomes final in the coming months.

Energy and Environment newsletter

The science and policy of environmental issues.

Zinke said the proposal is consistent with President Trump’s executive order in April to widen energy exploration. He said it was a clear departure from the Obama administration’s effort to protect areas rather than exploit them. “This is a clear difference between energy weakness and energy dominance,” the secretary said. He vowed that the Trump administration would heed environmental safeguards.

But potential environmental disasters are on the minds of numerous Atlantic coast governors who oppose drilling in four planning areas from Maine to the Florida Keys. In a resounding bi-partisan call, Republicans and Democrats have said in no uncertain terms that oil and gas drilling should not be allowed.

“I’m not in favor of offshore drilling,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) has said. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) is opposed out of concern over drilling’s impact on the state’s natural resources.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie fired off a letter to the Interior agency that issues permits saying the state “strongly opposes any waters off our coastline being considered for inclusion in this leasing program,” citing its $44 billion beach tourism industry that creates more than 300,000 jobs.

The Democratic governors of North Carolina and Delaware are also opposed. Republican Gov. Rick Scott of Florida, where beach tourism on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts generates nearly $50 billion dollars and a half million jobs annually, according to a Florida Atlantic University report, said Thursday that he adamantly opposes drilling off the state’s coast and requested a meeting with Zinke.

Governor Scott’s Statement on Trump Administration’s Plan on Offshore Oil Drilling:

The Obama administration considered a 5-year plan to permit drilling in the southern Atlantic between Virginia and Georgia but abandoned it in March 2016 because of concerns raised states and the Navy, which conducts military exercises in a vast area of the ocean near those states. A barrage of letters and comments from coastal communities opposed to the plan also played a role.

Zinke did not address potential conflicts with the Pentagon, but Kate McGregor, an assistant secretary, said that a task force has been established between Interior and the Defense Department to deal with them. “We believe things can be done safely,” McGregor said. “In fact, in the central Gulf of Mexico planning area, 36 percent of leases are in military planning areas. We intend to continue a very strong relationship with DoD.”

The Defense Department did not immediately comment.

President Trump has extolled oil and gas exploration as part of an energy dominance agenda. The administration made history last month with its proposal to open nearly 77 million more acres in the Gulf of Mexico to companies wanting to purchase federal oil and gas leases, the largest offering in U.S. history.

worst environmental disasters in U.S. history, the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent spill of 215 million gallons of crude into the Gulf that fouled beaches from Louisiana to Florida. The effects of the spill are still being felt more than seven years later.

Hydrocarbons linked to the spill were detected in 90 percent of pelican eggs more than 1,000 miles away in Minnesota, scientists say. Dolphins living in Barataria, La. have experienced mortality rates 8 percent higher than dolphin populations elsewhere, and their reproduction success dropped 63 percent. The well’s owner, British Petroleum, has paid penalties in excess of $61 billion as of July 2016.

Two weeks ago, the Interior Department suspended a study conducted by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine on the safety of offshore oil and gas drilling platforms.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which oversees offshore leasing, promised that the environment would be protected. “American energy production can be competitive while remaining safe and environmentally sound,” Vincent DeVito, Interior’s counselor for energy policy, said at the time. “People need jobs, the Gulf Coast states need revenue, and Americans do not want to be dependent on foreign oil.”

Oceana, a non-profit conservation group that monitors fisheries and pollution, called the proposal “a recipe for disaster.” Citing the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, Diane Hoskins, the group’s campaign director, said, “This radical offshore drilling free-for-all is a clear example of politics over people, ignoring widespread local and state opposition.”

A California conservation group cited polls showing that nearly 70 percent of Californians oppose offshore drilling and say beaches are important to its economy and quality of life. “That’s a significant majority willing to push back against those who would destroy them with new offshore oil drilling,” said Jennifer Savage of the Surfrider Foundation.

But drilling also had supporters, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.). “With this program, my constituents… whose jobs depend on the energy industry can rest easy knowing that oil and gas development is a priority for this administration,” Scalise said. “With increase exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond, we will be able to create more jobs and continue to receive revenue sharing that’s vital to rebuilding our coast.”

I really don't know what America has against Palestinians. And all those politicians know what's going on over there, even if the people don't. Even Isreal's press is more open than ours (and yet I don't know that they understand what their own history is either).

They're Arab, plain and simple. Hell, 50 years ago, our country wouldn't have lifted a finger to help Israel either. But somewhere along the way, we remembered that Antisemitism was a bad thing (and a few years before that we fought people who hated Jews more that we did), and the realization that Christianity stemmed from Judaism. So we overlooked the fact that they weren't white Christians, and got chummy with them. And since they hated the Arabs, we decided we had to as well.

I don't think there really is an easy answer to any of it. Other than my country has a looooong history of racism. Yay, 'Murica.

People have a long history of racism. The only reason politicians care about Israel now is that there many wealthy and influential Jews (campaign donors) living here. It's always about the money.
