This is a masterpiece of writing from Carpenter. Pogmore's psychic wave pattern phenomena to explain ghosts is ingenious and quite persuasive. Ghosts are just hallucinations of what deep down we want to believe generated by latent psychic energy plays on our readiness to enjoy the ghostly characters of the show because we would like them to be real.
Neil McCarthy is excellent as Pogmore, and Gudgin finally admits to himself that Motley is haunted by genuine departed spirits. As Pogmore's machine was designed to disperse electro magnetic psychic waves, and it did disperse the ghosts temporarily at least, one can question whether the ghosts are indeed just in our imagination or real. Well, in the show they're real, but imaginary beyond that of course. Brilliant stuff.

PART ONE:

Am at the halfway mark and so far this has been a very good, strong episode.

Neil McCarthy is clearly relishing his role as the scientist who threatens to bring doom to the Motley Hall residents.

Bodkin's farewell was nicely done, especially the untold joke left hanging in the air.

I loved the "Burke and Hare" joke near the start too.

Oh well, on to part two.....

PART TWO:

That all wrapped up very nicely.

Quite an important episode in that Gudgin has finally met and talked to one of the ghosts.

I couldn't help but notice that that seemed to be a very real and solid handshake that Sir George gave to Pogmore. Not sure how that works within the internal logic of the series.

But no matter. This was one of the best episodes yet.

It even allowed Matt to have a poignant moment at the end before realising that all was well and the status quo had been restored.

A solid 9 out of 10

That's a fascinating interpretation that can't be dismissed. Makes one think.
