    Review The Orville (2017)

Just watched episode 7 "Majority Rule" which I quite enjoyed. Like classic Trek it took a current social issue (social media) and explored it by landing on a planet ruled by it. An interesting look at the way the world seems to be heading as democracy gives way to populism.

Fun Tolkien: The Life & Works

Yes. I think it's time for Ant-Mac to start demanding reboots/reimaginings of all classic movies and TV shows. That should put a complete stop to all this madness.

    Review Thor Ragnarok (2017)

Just back from seeing this and I have to say it is excellent. I've not been a big fan of the Thor movies so far but this one was far and away the best, and one of the better MCU movies as well. It gets everything right - great action scenes, tension and sadness, and completely hilarious at the...

Controversial Jonesy the Cat: What Happened Next?

As I understand it they used four different cats for the filming. Apparently Weaver was complaining about the performance of one, unaware that it was the one she was holding. Fortunately the cat, ever the professional, didn't let the feud interfere with his performance.:emoji_alien:

Review Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (2019)

I'm getting a little tired of hearing all of these shows labeled as "reboots". When you read the description of many (including this one) they've got nothing to do with the original show they're supposedly rebooting. A more accurate description would be "title reuse for brand new, unrelated show".

    Review Magnum P.I. (2018)

The only chance of a new Magnum P.I. series working is if they make it a continuation set 30 years after the original and get Tom Selleck (and his moustache) back. The original show, while fun, was really only a hit because of the charm of it's lead actor.

    Fun Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

And they don't sound like Klingons. I'm not fluent in the language, so it's entirely possible they are speaking it correctly, but it just sounds different to the Klingon language we've heard in other series. I'm also not fond of the idea that we only hear them speaking in Klingon. Traditionally...

Review Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)

I wouldn't even try to compare the two. They're such different concepts that comparisons are impossible. The only things in common between the first and third are the characters of the apes. Everything else is different. Both are excellent movies in their own way.

    Fun Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

I watched about half of this episode yesterday. Then I decided to turn it of in favour of cleaning the house. I'm just really struggling to work up any interest in this show now. I honestly didn't think I'd be able to find a character I liked less than Michael but Captain Lorca is starting to...

Fun Star Trek: The Animated Series

That and a general dismissal of animation at the time as being "just for kids"

Review Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

OK it's drawing a pretty long bow but there are some interesting ideas in here. I always thought that ST5 had a lot of story potential but it's clear that the script, as filmed, wasn't anywhere near ready. Between that and the (apparent) studio insistence on the added humour and the special...

    Fun Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

Great to see that the writers are adhering to the canon established in the one series that Gene Rodenberry considered non-canon.

Review The City on the Edge of Forever (1966)

I don't think the renewal has anything to do with viewing figures or quality. It's simply a "recognisable" marketing tool to sell a streaming service. I've read a number of reports that suggest that the CBS executives aren't looking for the series itself to make money (although obviously they'll...

    Review Mudd's Women (1966)

Identical twins? Two pictures of the exact same guy ten years apart? Who can tell?

Review Let That Be Your Last Battlefield (1969)

    Dr Seuss did it better.

Review ST:TAS: "More Tribbles, More Troubles" (1973)

I've never been a big huge of the animated series. It's ok, but like George Takei said in a video on another thread somewhere, there was so much more they could have done with animation freeing them from the constraints of building aliens around human actors or sets from a limited budget.

Review Mission to the Unknown (1965)

The very first "Doctor-lite" episode. And you all thought that was just a new series thing :emoji_alien:

    Fun Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

Well obviously Enterprise wasn't the technological marvel we all thought it was. Just a second rate ship without all the good technology that was available. They were just humouring Kirk and the others by letting them think that Enterprise was the fleet's flagship. Maybe Riker grew up in an...

I'm honestly not sure how anyone can make a statement like that with a straight face.

    Review Doctor Who (2005)

I can't see any reason why they wouldn't. There were pretty huge outcries from girls about not being able to get Black Widow merchandise after the Avengers movies. In fact it might open up merchandising to a whole new range. Doctor Who makeup bags? etc. There may be some reduction of boys...
