I think that's one of the benefits of not being able to do much with special effects. You're left with no choice except to focus on making the story as compelling as possible. When special effects are easy it becomes too easy for producers to rely on them to cover any flaws in a story.

From what I've read and heard it's not that he didn't want to do it. It was more a case of being hesitant due to the workload involved. He is a fan of the show and seems to be interested in developing the show through its next stage.
