There are bands who can replace a singer and do very well. The problem is, Freddie was Queen. Or rather, he embodied what Queen was. It was May's brilliant guitar work, Duncan's moving bass and Taylor's steady beat, but Freddie's voice, his presence...that is what a singer should be. I caught them on BBC America with Paul Rodgers, and it just hurt to watch. Paul's a great singer, but he's not Freddie.

Queen biopic 'is finally happening'

The long-awaited biopic of the British rock group Queen is apparently going ahead after years of false starts.

Initially Sacha Baron Cohen was attached to star as Freddie Mercury, then director Dexter Fletcher dropped out. But now, according to the band anyway, the film will happen.

A statement on their website reads: "Yes folks, it IS finally happening.

"Award winning director Bryan Singer is the man who will be bringing the Queen and Freddie story alive. If you’ve ever seen Singer’s X-Men films, or the groundbreaking movie The Usual Suspects, you’ll know this is a director with extraordinary imagination and style."

The statement adds that Queens show-stealing performance at Live Aid in 1985 will be recreated.

Mr Robot actor Rami Malek has signed on to play Freddie Mercury, though other casting is yet to be announced.

“Rami has great presence and he’s utterly dedicated to the project. He’s completely living and breathing Freddie already, which is wonderful," said the band.

Pre-production begins next week in the UK with principal photography in London from September.

Queen announce the coronation of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in upcoming biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody

The upcoming Queen biopic, tentatively called Bohemian Rhapsody, “IS finally happening,” according to a statement on the band’s website on Friday, and it will star Rami Malek as lead vocalist, songwriter and pianist Freddie Mercury. This had been revealed beforehand, but this also seems to be officially confirmation.

“Rami has great presence and he’s utterly dedicated to the project,” guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor said in a joint statement. “He’s completely living and breathing Freddie already, which is wonderful.”

The film has been in limbo for over ten years as the band auditioned directors and actors, including Ben Whishaw, Dexter Fletcher, David Fincher, and Sacha Baron Cohen, who dropped out in 2013 over creative differences with the band.

“Brian May is an amazing musician. But he’s not a great movie producer,” Cohen told The Howard Stern Show in 2016.

“He went off and told untruths about what happened,” guitarist May responded. It went back and forth for a bit.

Queen confirmed that the film would be directed by Bryan Singer.

"If you've ever seen Singer’s X-Men films, or the groundbreaking movie The Usual Suspects, you’ll know this is a director with extraordinary imagination and style," Queen wrote on their website. "A perfect choice to recreate the fabulous Queen years which brought us such unforgettable moments as Live Aid, which we can reveal will be faithfully recreated for a key sequence the film."

The band promises to reveal what actors will portray May, Taylor and former bassist John Deacon over the next few months. They also hinted that Queen fans might play extras in the movie.

"We've been 12 years on this trail, but I think we're very close now to an announcement, which will signify that Fox has given the green light to actually supply the money. So yes, I think we're very close," May told Rolling Stone after the film was greenlit.

The film is due in cinemas at the end of next year.
