FROM BACK IN 2011.....

NASA/JSC is implementing an advanced propulsion physics laboratory, informally known as "Eagleworks", to pursue propulsion technologies necessary to enable human exploration of the solar system over the next 50 years, and enabling interstellar spaceflight by the end of the century. This work directly supports the "Breakthrough Propulsion" objectives detailed in the NASA OCT TA02 In-space Propulsion Roadmap, and aligns with the #10 Top Technical Challenge identified in the report. Since the work being pursued by this laboratory is applied scientific research in the areas of the quantum vacuum, gravitation, nature of space-time, and other fundamental physical phenomenon, high fidelity testing facilities are needed. The lab will first implement a low-thrust torsion pendulum (<1 uN), and commission the facility with an existing Quantum Vacuum Plasma Thruster. To date, the QVPT line of research has produced data suggesting very high specific impulse coupled with high specific force. If the physics and engineering models can be explored and understood in the lab to allow scaling to power levels pertinent for human spaceflight, 400kW SEP human missions to Mars may become a possibility, and at power levels of 2MW, 1-year transit to Neptune may also be possible. Additionally, the lab is implementing a warp field interferometer that will be able to measure spacetime disturbances down to 150nm. Recent work published by White [1] [2] [3] suggests that it may be possible to engineer spacetime creating conditions similar to what drives the expansion of the cosmos. Although the expected magnitude of the effect would be tiny, it may be a "Chicago pile" moment for this area of physics.

1977 Alien Broadcast LIVE on BBC?

hqdefault.jpg

The Southern Television broadcast interruption was a broadcast interruption through the Hannington transmitter of the Independent Broadcasting Authority in the United Kingdom at 5:10 p.m. on 26 November 1977. The broadcast message is generally considered to be a hoax, but the identity of the hijacker is unknown.

The incident caused some alarm locally, and attracted considerable publicity in the next day's Sunday newspapers, with the IBA immediately pronouncing that the broadcast was a hoax.[6] The IBA confirmed that it was the first time such a hoax transmission had been made.

The event was reported around the world with numerous American newspapers picking up the story from the UPI press agency.

The broadcast also became a footnote in ufology as some chose to accept the supposed 'alien' broadcast at face value, questioning the explanation of a transmitter hijack. Within two days of the report of the incident in the Times, a letter to the editor published on 30 November 1977 asked, "[How] can the IBA – or anyone else – be sure that the broadcast was a hoax?" The editorial board of one local newspaper—the Eugene Register-Guard—commented, "Nobody seemed to consider that 'Asteron' may have been for real." By as late as 1985, the story had entered urban folklore, with suggestions that there had never been any explanation of the broadcast.

The incident was featured on a 1999 episode of children's television series It's a Mystery, produced by one of Southern's successors, Meridian Television. The feature reenacted the incident with faux news reports and viewers watching the incident play out at home.

This is the voice of Gramaha, the Representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command speaking to you.

For many years now you have seen us as lights in the skies.

We speak to you now in peace and wisdom as we have done to your brothers and sisters all over this, your planet earth.

We come to warn you of the destiny of your race and your worlds so that you may communicate to your fellow beings the course you must take to avoid the disasters which threaten your worlds and the beings on our worlds around you.

This is in order that you may share in the great awakening, as the planet passes into the New Age of Aquarius.

The new age can be a time of great peace and evolution for your race, but only if your rulers are made aware of the evil forces that can overshadow their judgments.

Be still now and listen, for your chance may not come again.

For many years your scientists, governments and generals have not heeded our warnings; they have continued to experiment with the evil forces of what you call nuclear energy.

Atomic bombs can destroy the earth and the beings of your sister worlds, in a moment.

The wastes from atomic power systems will poison your planet for many thousands of your years to come.

We, who have followed the path of evolution for far longer than you, have long since realized this -- that atomic energy is always directed against life.

It has no peaceful application. Its use, and research into its use, must be ceased at once, or you all risk destruction.

All weapons of evil must be removed.

The time of conflict is now past and the race of which you are a part may proceed to the highest planes of evolution if you show yourselves worthy to do this.

You have but a short time to learn to live together in peace and goodwill.

Small groups all over the planet are learning this, and exist to pass on the light of the dawning new age to you all.

You are free to accept or reject their teachings, but only those who learn to live in peace will pass to the higher realms of spiritual evolution.

Hear now the voice of Gramaha, the representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command speaking to you.

Be aware also that there are many false prophets and guides operating on your world.

They will suck your energy from you -- the energy you call money and will put it to evil ends giving you worthless dross in return.

Your inner divine self will protect you from this.

You must learn to be sensitive to the voice within, that can tell you what is truth, and what is confusion, chaos and untruth.

Learn to listen to the voice of truth which is within you, and you will lead yourselves on to the path of evolution.

This is our message to you our dear friends.

We have watched you growing for many years as you too have watched our lights in your skies.

You know that we are here, and that there are more beings on and around your earth than your scientists admit.

We are deeply concerned about you and your path towards the light, and will do all we can to help you.

Have no fears, seek only to know yourselves and live in harmony with the ways of your planet earth.

We of the Asta Galactic Command thank you for your attention.

We are now leaving the planes of your existence.

May you be blessed by the supreme love and truth of the Cosmos.

A project searching for intelligent life in the cosmos is going to check the first known interstellar asteroid for signs of alien technology.

The odd-shaped object was detected as it sped towards the Sun on 19 October.

Its properties suggested it originated around another star, making it the first such body to be spotted in our cosmic neighbourhood.

An initiative backed by billionaire Yuri Milner will use a radio telescope to listen for signals from it.

The team's efforts will begin on Wednesday, with astronomers observing the asteroid, which is currently speeding away from our Solar System, across four different radio frequency bands.

The first set of observations at the Robert C Byrd Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia is due to last for 10 hours.

If it starts transmitting whalesong, directed at Earth's oceans, I shall officially panic! :emoji_disappointed_relieved:

Then again, it could just demand to join with it's creator. :emoji_confused:

TRAPPIST-1, also designated as 2MASS J23062928-0502285,[6] is an ultra-cool red dwarf star that is slightly larger but much more massive than the planet Jupiter, located 39.6 light-years (12.1 pc) from the Sun in the constellation Aquarius.[9][10]Seven temperate terrestrial planets have been detected orbiting the star, a larger number than detected in any other planetary system.[11][12] A study released in May 2017 suggests that the tightly packed exoplanets avoid colliding with one another due to orbits that are harmoniously resonant and, as a result, are stable for very long times.

Astronomers first discovered three Earth-sized planets orbiting the dwarf star in 2015. A team led by Michaël Gillon (fr) at the University of Liège in Belgium detected the planets using transit photometry with the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) at the La Silla Observatory in Chile.

On 22 February 2017, astronomers announced four additional exoplanets around TRAPPIST-1. This work used the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope at Paranal, among others, and brought the total number of planets to seven, of which three are considered to be within its habitable zone.

The others could also be habitable as they may possess liquid water somewhere on their surface.

Depending on definition, up to six could be in the optimistic habitable zone (c, d, e, f, g, h), with estimated equilibrium temperatures of 170ºK to 330ºK.

This video shows artist's concepts of the seven Earth-sized planets of TRAPPIST-1, an exoplanet system about 40 light-years away, based on data current as of February 2018. Each planet is shown in sequence, starting with the innermost TRAPPIST-1 b and ending with the outermost TRAPPIST-1 h. The video presents the planets’ relative sizes as well as the relative scale of the central star as seen from each planet. The art highlights possibilities for how the surfaces of these intriguing worlds might look based on their newly-calculated properties. The seven planets of TRAPPIST-1 are all Earth-sized and terrestrial. TRAPPIST-1 is an ultra-cool dwarf star in the constellation Aquarius, and its planets orbit very close to it. In the background, slightly distorted versions our familiar constellations, including Orion and Taurus, are shown as they would appear from the location of TRAPPIST-1 (backdrop image courtesy California Academy of Sciences/Dan Tell).

KIC 8462852[1] (also Tabby's Star or Boyajian's Star) is an F-type main-sequence star located in the constellation Cygnusapproximately 1,280 light-years (390 pc) from Earth.

Unusual light fluctuations of the star, including up to a 22% dimming in brightness, were discovered by citizen scientists as part of the Planet Hunters project, and, in September 2015, astronomers and citizen scientists associated with the project posted a preprint of an article describing the data and possible interpretations.

The discovery was made from data collected by the Kepler space telescope, which observes changes in the brightness of distant stars to detect exoplanets.

Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the star's large irregular changes in brightness as measured by its light curve, but none to date fully explain all aspects of the curve. The likely explanation, announced by NASA on 4 October 2017, is that an "uneven ring of dust" orbits KIC 8462852.

Another hypothesis, based on a lack of observed infrared light, posits a swarm of cold, dusty comet fragments in a highly eccentric orbit, however, the notion that disturbed comets from such a cloud could exist in high enough numbers to obscure 22% of the star's observed luminosity has been doubted.

Another hypothesis is that of a large number of small masses in "tight formation" orbiting the star.

Furthermore, spectroscopic study of the system has found no evidence for coalescing material or hot close-in dust or circumstellar matter from an evaporating or exploding planet within a few astronomical units of the mature central star.

It has also been hypothesized that the changes in brightness could be signs of activity associated with intelligent extraterrestrial life constructing a Dyson swarm.

The scientists involved are very skeptical, however, with others describing it as implausible.

KIC 8462852 is not the only star that has large irregular dimmings, but all other such stars are young stellar objects called YSO dippers, which have different dimming patterns. An example of such an object is EPIC 204278916.

New light fluctuation events of KIC 8462852 began in the middle of May 2017, and totaled, as of 16 September 2017, four prominent dimmings, the last one being the largest of the year, with a 2.3% (or 3%) dimming.

On 10 October 2017, an increased brightening, lasting about two weeks, of the starlight from KIC 8462852 was noted, and a possible explanation described.

Around 20 November 2017, a fifth prominent dimming event began and had deepened to a 0.44% depth; as of 16 December 2017, the event recovered, leveled off for 11 days, faded again to a dimming depth of 1.25%, and began recovering again.

Dimming and brightening events of the star continue to be monitored, with related light curves released frequently.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope developed in coordination among NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency.[5] It is scheduled to be launched in 2019[3] and will be located near the Earth–Sun L2 Lagrangian point. The telescope will offer unprecedented resolution and sensitivity from the long-wavelength (orange to red) visible light through the mid-infrared (0.6 to 27 micrometre) range.

JWST's capabilities will enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology.[6] One particular goal involves observing some of the most distant events and objects in the universe, such as the formation of the first galaxies. These types of targets are beyond the reach of current ground and space-based instruments. Some other goals include understanding the formation of stars and planets, and direct imaging of exoplanets and novas.

In gestation since 1996,[7] it is part of NASA's Flagship program. The telescope is named after James E. Webb, the second administrator of NASA, who played an integral role in the Apollo program.

NASA has described JWST as the scientific successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, but not a replacement, because the capabilities are not identical.[9] JWST will have the ability to see high-redshift objects, typically both older and farther away than previous instruments could assess.[10] The result was to extend the life of Hubble until JWST, as the next generation telescope, could go online.[10] This led to a radically altered design for JWST to obtain images deeper into the infrared than Hubble, and beyond the capabilities of the Infrared Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope.

In contrast to the Hubble Space Telescope, which has a 2.4-meter (7.9 ft) mirror, the JWST primary mirror is composed of 18 hexagonal mirror segments for a combined mirror size of 6.5-meter-diameter (21 ft 4 in). A large sunshield will keep JWST's mirror and four science instruments below 50 K (−220 °C; −370 °F).

In December 2016, NASA announced that the JWST has passed major milestones, including completion of its primary mirror and integration of science instruments with the payload module, and is undergoing acoustic and extreme vibration testing to simulate launch conditions.
