New Details On “The Mandalorian” Series
The Star Wars Celebration convention on Friday was all about “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” film. On Saturday it was all about the ‘Galaxy’s Edge’ theme park and “Jedi: Fallen Order” game. This morning however, it was focused on the first live-action “Star Wars” series ever – “The Mandalorian”.
Producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni were joined on stage by actors Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano and the one and only Carl Weathers to promote the show which is set to be a launch title for the new Disney+ streaming service on November 12th.
Several new details about the series have been revealed, confirming the show is set five years after the fall of the Empire with Favreau saying he wanted to explore an age which will be partly inspired by the end of the Samurai in Japan and the post-civil war west in America.
As a result, some vestiges of the Empire will be incorporated into the narrative including one scene involving Stormtroopers which they didn’t have enough extras for and ended up enlisting the help of the fan-based organization the 501st Legion who came with their own uniforms and seemingly didn’t need much direction.
Pascal’s titular character is a lone gunfighter of questionable moral character in the outer reaches of the galaxy and far from the authority of the New Republic, while his ship is the Razorcrest – a reflective army surplus gunship. Carano plays Kara Dune, an ex-Rebel shock trooper and a bit of a loner who has trouble reintegrating into society. Weathers plays Grief Carga who runs the Bounty Hunter’s guild and hires The Mandalorian for a job.
Sadly there was no trailer in the livestream, and a near four-minute behind-the-scenes featurette was screened only for the crowd in the room (bootlegs are already popping up on YouTube). A few clips of live-action elements were shown, but most of that reel was soundbites and some sketches of things like Pascal’s character mounting a Dewback in at least one sequence.
