“Ninja Turtles” Reboot To Film This Year

ninja-turtles-reboot-to-film-this-year-696x464.jpg

Back in June last year came word that Paramount Pictures had begun development of a third movie in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise, one that would serve as a reboot of the property.

At the time Andrew Dodge (“Bad Words”) was hired to pen the script while Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller will produce via Platinum Dunes. The project was said to be in early development so it seemed likely to be years away.

Yesterday, Form and Fuller appeared on the red carpet for the 2019 Critics Choice Awards and confirmed to Variety that the project is following a timetable which suggests it’s moving faster than expected. Form confirms it aims to begin production at the end of the year. No word on director or cast as yet.

The previous film, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” opened mid-2016 and made a disappointing $246 million from a $135 million budget.

Stahelski Talks “Highlander” Franchise Plans

stahelski-talks-highlander-franchise-plans-696x464.jpg

“John Wick” franchise director Chad Stahelski revealed in 2016 he was involved in the reboot of the “Highlander” action-fantasy franchise. However his recent commitments, including directing “John Wick: Chapter 3” opening in May, have prevented him from doing much.

Talking with Collider this week shortly after the release of the new trailer for that third ‘Wick’, Stahelski insists he still wants to adapt the property but it’s not clear how far his ambitions for it go as they could well move beyond a mere film reboot:

“Highlander is an interesting property. It’s through Lionsgate as well and Neal Moritz. We’re trying to get it done. Anyone who knows anything about the property knows it has a lot of meat to it. It’s a good property. It’s got a lot of potential. We’re just trying to figure out the best way not to f–k it up.

Not to try and fit it into a 1 hour, 45 minute movie, which, when your pitch is, ‘There can be only one,’ and in your first movie you kill everybody but the one, sequels have a problem of happening. So we’re trying to design in a way that gives us a little more lead in, a little more time with the mythology and see some of the best characters.

They did seven seasons of TV, and even though the TV show may not hold up today, the idea of it and the characters they brought in were super cool. So we’re trying to devise a methodology that leads up to The Quickening.”

He also has no problem with the idea of doing the property in the streaming or premium cable realm if it’s the right fit, and suggests the project is well into development.

“We’re well past the script phase in terms of what we want to accomplish with a feature-length version of what we want and based on there being more after that. We want to tell the complete story of The Quickening, the Immortals, and all that. But the overall environment is changing so much. Look what Netflix is doing with TV now.

As an action designer myself, there are two or three episodes of Game of Thrones that blow away 90% of features. Netflix has a whole new delivery system with features on that coming off differently and letting filmmakers and directors expand out without being crushed by opening weekend box office. So there’s a couple different mediums we want to explore and what is the best way to bring this out in.”

Russell Mulcahy’s “Highlander” released in 1986 starred Christopher Lambert as an immortal Scottish warrior who can only be killed by decapitation and Sean Connery as his mentor. Numerous sequels and TV series followed.

Oscar winner Errol Morris (“The Fog of War,” “The Thin Blue Line”) is set to direct the biopic “Weegee” about famed photojournalist Arthur Fellig.

Fellig, nicknamed ‘Weegee the Famous,’ was a street photographer who began working in 1930s New York chasing police cars and ambulances to capture life and death in the city – his work appearing in Vogue and Life among other outlets.

Morris says: “Weegee may not have singlehandedly invented the noir sensibility, but without him, noir would be unimaginable. He recognized he was constructing his own vision of reality, replete with vivid characters – rich, poor, depraved and otherwise.”

Emmy winner Lawrence Schiller will produce.

Whannell To Pen “Escape from New York”

rodriguez-up-for-escape-from-ny-remake-696x464.jpg

“Upgrade” writer/director Leigh Whannell has set to pen the upcoming remake of the John Carpenter classic “Escape From New York” reports THR.

The original was set in a future where the U.S. had become a totalitarian theocratic police state and the island of Manhattan is now a walled-off maximum security prison. Imprisoned former Special Forces officer Robert ‘Snake’ Plissken (Kurt Russell) has twenty-four hours to go in, rescue the U.S. President who is being held by the city prison’s most dangerous crook, and get out again.

Whannell’s vision for the film will reportedly retain elements of the original while also bringing new ideas to the table, trying to avoid the problems of remakes like “Total Recall” and “Robocop”. He replaces “Luther” creator Neil Cross who was previously attached.

There’s no plan in place for Whannell to direct at this point. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce.

Universal Pictures has announced that they’ve delayed the feature film adaptation of the blockbuster Broadway musical “Wicked” by another two years.
The project, originally slated for December 20th this year, will now open on December 22nd 2021 against “Avatar 3” and a Disney live-action feature.
The new date was inevitable late last year after Universal moved the Tom Hopper-directed film take of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” into that December 2019 slot.

The story is set at the beginning of the 19th century and follows two young magicians, pawns in an age-old rivalry between their mercurial illusionist fathers and the enchanted circus where their competition and romances play out. The fates of everyone involved hang in the balance.
