“Titans” To Explore Robin & Batman Split
Earlier this week came news that the long in the works “Titans,” the upcoming live-action TV series based on the DC Comics property “Teen Titans,” has finally set an October 12th premiere date on the soon to launch DC Universe streaming service.
While the first official photos of Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Robin and some of the other costumes such as Hawk and Dove were well received, set photos of some of the younger characters raised concerns. Then a trailer released at Comic Con, one featuring Robin uttering the now famed line “F–k Batman,” has been met with quite a bit of derision.
DC head honcho and series co-creator Geoff Johns spoke with
CBR this week about the divisive reaction to the clip and explains how Grayson’s rejection of Batman will be explored in the series and that the trailer doesn’t really represent the series as a whole:
“It is controversial! I think that was expected though, you know. I don’t think anyone was like, ‘What? Wait! What?!’ As I’ve been telling people, I’m like, you know, not to take the trailer as, ‘This is the whole show.’ But I’m glad there’s discussion and there should be discussion about that and why we would go that direction and why Robin would ever get to that point… a big part of the series that we’re exploring is the moment that Robin left Batman.
In the Titans, he was kind of a lost character. He was looking for what his next thing was, and the Titans individually are all lost and they form a family – a surrogate family that’s… you know, we’re staying true to Marv [Wolfman] and Geroge [Perez]’s take on the Titans in that sense. But you’re going to see what Robin’s gone through and why he’s gotten to that point and I’m excited for people to see it. I don’t think they really quite know what the show is, and it’s going to be fun to watch.”
He confirms Hawk and Dove come in on the second episode, and that Donna Troy/Wonder Girl is involved in the first season. The series also stars Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dove and Lindsey Gort as Amy Rohrbach.
