TITANS IS NEXT LIVE ACTION DC TV SHOW, BUT IT WON'T BE ON TV

    x9gokaig5jilun40yele.png

It’s official: There’s another DC TV show on the way to add to your watch ist alongside Arrow, Supergirl, Flash, and like a dozen more at this point, and this time it’s a live-action Teen Titans show, which has long been in development limbo. But there’s a twist—it’s not going to be on TV, and neither is the next season of Young Justice.

Warner Bro. has just confirmed that Titans and Young Justice’s third season—titled Young Justice: Outsiders—will headline a new DC-focused digital streaming service next year. Not details were confirmed about the new platform, other than that it will “deliver an immersive experience designed just for DC fans,” so expect more than Titans and Young Justice to come to the service.

A Titans TV show had been in the works at TNT, but the show was scrapped last year. It’s hard to tell how much of that plan remains in this new version—which will be executive produced by producer Akiva Goldsman, DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, and DC CW TV masterminds Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter—draws on the scrapped show, but it will seemingly at least star a few classic Titan characters. Dick Grayson, Starfire, and Raven are all mentioned in the press release, describing the show as following “a group of young soon-to-be Super Heroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe,” as Dick prepares to lead a new team of young heroes to safeguard the world.

Brenton Thwaites Is Nightwing In “Titans”

    brenton-thwaites-is-nightwing-in-titans-696x464.jpg

Australian actor Brenton Thwaites, who most recently played the young male lead in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and last year’s “Gods of Egypt,” has scored the key role of Dick Grayson/Nightwing in the “Titans” series which was previously setup at TNT.

The series, a live-action adaptation of the “Teen Titans” comics series, sees Thwaites’ Grayson leave behind his Robin identity and emerge from Batman’s shadow to become the leader of a fearless band of young, soon-to-be superheroes. While the statement doesn’t officially say Nightwing, casting breakdowns from the other month confirm the character takes on that moniker in the series.

In the statement, DC Chief Geoff Johns says: “Dick Grayson is one of the most important and iconic heroes in the DC universe, and it wasn’t easy to find him but we have. Brenton has the emotional depth, heart, danger and physical presence of Batman’s former protege and the Titans future leader. We’re extremely lucky he’s chosen to bring his talents to this project and this character.”

Thwaites joins a cast that currently includes Tegan Croft as Raven and Anna Diop as Starfire. “Titans” is set to stream exclusively on DC’s new online digital service which will be launched at some point next year.

Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are executive producing.

New Nightwing Actor’s Butt Gets Googled

    new-nightwing-actors-butt-gets-googled-696x464.jpg

In the immediate wake of his casting last week as Batman’s former protege Dick Grayson in “Titans,” young Australian actor Brenton Thwaites has found his backside has become the subject of a lot more Google searches.

Thwaites leads a cast of the live-action series based on the “Teen Titans” superhero team from DC Comics. The show is expected to debut on DC’s own digital service next year and serve as the launch show for the boutique streamer.

Of course in the comics Grayson becomes Nightwing, and that character in recent years has become famous for one very specific feature – his butt. The muscular posterior has become a key part of the character’s design and so any actor cast in the role is obviously going to have their backside scrutinised.

Even so Thwaites, who got his ass out in the opening scenes of the Ewan McGregor-led Australian thriller “Son of a Gun,” has found his rear end the subject of a major uptick in searches according to ComicBook.com.

There’s still no certainty that will actually don the costume of Nightwing on “Titans,” and the choice of actor has already come under fire for seemingly ignoring Grayson’s Romani heritage. The project is separate from the solo Nightwing film that Warner Bros. Pictures has in development.

“Titans” also stars Teagan Croft as Raven and Anna Diop as Starfire with filming aiming to begin this Fall ahead of a 2018 airing.

“Titans” Series To Feature Hawk & Dove

    titans-series-to-feature-hawk-dove-696x464.jpg

Earlier this week came the news that actor Brenton Thwaites had been cast as Dick Grayson in the upcoming “Titans” TV series.

It’s not immediately clear if he’s playing a post-Batman Robin or Nightwing incarnation of the character, the press release and statements made about the casting have very carefully avoided saying which one.

Now That Hashtag Show is reporting that the characters of Hawk, Dove and Detective Amy Rohrbach will also be joining the series in recurring roles with potential series regular options.

Hawk and Dove are a pair of crime-fighting vigilantes who have gone through several different incarnations over the years in the comics. Alan Ritchson (“Smallville”) and Rebecca Rittenhouse (“The Mindy Project”) are both reportedly under consideration for those parts.

With Rohrbach involved though, it looks like the 1990s Nightwing comics in which he was a member of the corrupt Bludhavan PD may well come into play. Rohrbach is one of the few clean cops working in Bludhaven who become Nightwing’s trusted ally.

Ritchson, Kelly Are Hawk & Dove For “Titans”

    ritchson-kelly-are-hawk-dove-for-titans-696x464.jpg

They were previously rumored as front runners, now it’s confirmed – Alan Ritchson (“Smallville”) and Minka Kelly (“Friday Night Lights”) have joined the cast of the DC live-action series “Titans”.

The pair will play crime-fighting/romantic duo Hawk (aka Hank Hall) and Dove (aka Dawn Granger) in the show produced by Warner Bros. Television. Both are recurring roles but could be upped to regulars if a second season goes forward.

Titans follows a group of young rising heroes, led by Batman’s former protege Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) and including the likes of Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven and others.

Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns and Greg Berlanti are penning the series which will premiere in 2018 as part of DC’s new direct-to-consumer digital service.

I'm okay with Starfire being black in this, but I'm confused. Starfire is orange, so she's already a person of color. Why the change from oran...

    Oh. Never mind.

Ra’s al Ghul Coming To DC’s “Titans” Series?

    ras-al-ghul-coming-to-dcs-titans-series-696x464.jpg

DC’s upcoming live-acton “Titans” series is reportedly seeking someone to play Batman villain Ra’s al Ghul if a new character breakdown is to be believed.

That Hashtag Show posted the breakdown which reads: “Male, 40s-50s, Middle Eastern, Latin, or East Indian. Seeking a young Richard Attenborough type. Fearless, manipulative, with unparalleled intelligence. Recurring guest star, seeking recognizable faces only.”

The character uses Lazarus Pits to replenish himself – effectively making him immortal. Liam Neeson played him in 2005’s “Batman Begins,” David Warner portrayed him in the classic “Batman” animated series, while Matt Nable and Alexander Siddig have taken on the role more recently in The CW’s “Arrow” and FOX’s “Gotham” respectively.

Set to debut later this year on the DC Comics-branded digital platform, “Titans” stars Brenton Thwaites as Robin, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dove, and Lindsey Gort as Detective Amy Rohrbach.

Doom Patrol Are Coming To The “Titans” Series

    doom-patrol-are-coming-to-the-titans-series-696x464.jpg

DC Comics chief Geoff Johns has confirmed on social media that beloved comics characters The Doom Patrol will be making their live-action debut in the upcoming “Titans” series for DC’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service.

Johns shared a script page, revealing the fifth episode of the new series will be named after the superhero team with at least one of the key characters to appear. One, Beast Boy, has already been set as a regular cast member and is played by Ryan Potter.

The “Doom Patrol” comic has had various interpretations over the years, the most famous being Grant Morrison’s run in early 1990s which incorporated bizarre secret societies, Dada, surrealism and parody in its story of a team of misfits and outcasts.

Brenton Thwaites, Minka Kelly, Alan Ritchson, Teagan Croft, Anna Diop, Seamus Dever, and Lindsey Gort star in “Titans” which is set to premiere later this year.

April Bowlby To Play Elasti-Girl In “Titans”

    april-bowlby-to-play-elasti-girl-in-titans-696x464.jpg

“Drop Dead Diva” actress April Bowlby has been cast as Rita Farr, a.k.a. Elasti-Girl, in the upcoming direct-to-streaming series “Titans” For Warner Bros. TV and DC Entertainment.

The character is a member of “The Doom Patrol,” the iconic Vertigo Comics team of super-powered misfits which went through a number of iterations – most famously the version by Grant Morrison.

In the comics Rita Farr was exposed to a toxic gas that altered her cellular structure, allowing her to expand or shrink her body at will. Bowlby’s casting follows that of Bruno Bichir as Dr. Niles Caulder, a.k.a. The Chief, and suggests the team’s original roster will be involved.

That means the roles of Negative Man and Robotman will be involved, though they have yet to be cast. Elasti-Girl will make her first appearance in the fifth episode.

“Titans,” inspired by the “Teen Titans” comic series, features Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) leading a group of young superheroes, including Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft), Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dove (Minka Kelly). Geoff Johns, Akiva Goldsman, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter are executive producing.

It is currently set to serve as the launch series of DC’s direct-to-streaming platform which is targeting a late 2018 bow.

Dwain Murphy (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “The Strain”) has been cast as Larry Trainor, aka the heavily bandaged Negative Man, in the upcoming direct-to-streaming DC TV series “Titans” reports Den of Geek.

Trainor is a former pilot who gained strange ‘negative energy’ powers after a plane crash, and was one of the founding members of the Doom Patrol which includes The Chief (Bruno Bichir), Elasti-Girl (April Bowlby) and Robotman (Jake Michaels). DC chief Geoff Johns previously confirmed the appearance of the Doom Patrol on the series.

The group first appears on the fifth episode, starring alongside the show’s main cast which includes Brenton Thwaites’ Robin, Teagan Croft’s Raven, Anna Diop’s Starfire, Ryan Potter’s Beast Boy and Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly’s Hawk and Dove. “Titans” debuts on DC’s still unnamed streaming service sometime in 2018.

Meanwhile a Saturday March 24th premiere date has been set for “Constantine,” CW Seed’s upcoming animated series based on the popular DC Comics character.

Matt Ryan, who played the character in live-action form on both NBC’s short-lived series and in The CW’s Arrow-verse shows, voices the master of the occult. David S. Goyer, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter serve as executive producers.

“Titans” To Feature Wayne Penthouse & More

    titans-to-feature-wayne-penthouse-more-696x464.jpg

An apparent leaked call sheet from “Titans,” the upcoming series adaptation of the DC Comics title “Teen Titans,” has revealed several other key elements from the DC universe that will appear in the new series.

As we know, the show stars Brenton Thwaites as team leader Robin/Dick Grayson. The new call sheet indicates “House of Cards” and “The Blacklist” actor Reed Birney will play a character known as The Messenger.

Additionally, Bruce Wayne’s penthouse will serve as a location which leads to the assumption that though he’s out as Robin, Dick Grayson retains use of some of his former mentor’s resources. There’s been no confirmation that Bruce will actually appear in the series.

There’s also mention of a scene involving an asylum which features the Titans rescuing Starfire from a surgical table. The series, expected to be the launch title of DC’s new digital service later this year, is currently shooting in Toronto under the name “Freebirds”.
