    Review Star Trek (2009)

George Takei, simply because in the new movies Cho has been largely relegated to a background character. Beyond gave him a larger part but it still hasn't been enough to really develop much in the way of character.

    Review Doctor Who Monsters

Not the best story to finish the season with, especially after the quality of the previous three stories. And the image of the "emotionless" cyberleader having a tantrum ....

    Review The Tom Baker Doctor

When I got to the age where I thought about this issue, I worked on the assumption that the station had been put into a highly elliptical orbit and had been at a far greater distance from the earth during the flares.

    Review Classic Who Companions!

Her arrival and departure are symptomatic of her appearance in the show. More of an afterthought than anything impactful.

    Review Doctor Who Monsters

Everything up to the end of Jon Pertwee (and much of Tom Baker) I knew from the novelisation before seeing the episodes. This book was my introduction to both the second Doctor and companions Ben, Polly and Jamie. I was sold on the 2nd Doctor from then on and he's remained one of my favourites...

    Review Modern Who Companions

At first I thought he was going to be another Mickey but then we got Vampires of Venice with him calling the Doctor out. I was a fan from that moment on.

    Review The Tom Baker Doctor

The significant amount of location shooting makes this look really good. As alpha128 mentioned it's hampered by its placement between two all time great episodes so it tends to get overlooked. Put this serial between two stories like Revenge of the Cybermen and Nightmare of Eden and it would be...

Review Why do religious people take offense to church humour?

I've always loved Life of Brian since the first time I saw it (Monty Python were one of the best comedic groups of all time). I've used clips from that movie in church services on a few occasions now with no complaints. Actually, current accepted historical research, suggests that they were...

    Controversial Scientology

I think it was Arthur C. Clark that once stated that there are about 100 billion stars in the Milky Way and about the same number of people that have lived. Assuming that most have one or more planets, that would mean one each (and possibly more). Better head out and stake your claim...

    Controversial Did Jesus Actually Exist?

Yeshua, which is the Hebrew name from which Jesus is translated into Greek, (and is commonly utilised today as Joshua) was an extremely common name in that location at the time. It's a bit like bumping into someone named John today.

Review History Written by the Victors?

It certainly might be interesting to see the writings of the losers. Unfortunately all too often they were destroyed by the winners. An interesting example is in Old Testament studies (which I'm currently doing). The fact that the Bible has survived as a set of writings means that often the only...

    Controversial Politics

No but I believe all politicians (and people in general really) are corruptible in the right circumstances.

Controversial Do You Vote at Elections?

I'm also a yes because, like ant-mac, I'm Australian and voting is compulsory. However, even if it was optional , I'd still vote because even if my single vote doesn't end up mattering in the end, at least I get the satisfaction of numbering all my choices and making sure that whoever I like...

Review Why do religious people take offense to church humour?

Speaking as a Christian, I don't have any issues with jokes. I can happily laugh at jokes about the church and God. The main thing is that they're funny jokes. Some people's idea of a joke is just nastiness and that's not funny. But a funny joke, even if it's at my expense will get me laughing...

    Controversial Did Jesus Actually Exist?

There's a fair amount of historical evidence for Jesus' existence. A lot of research has gone into trying to work out what the historical Jesus (as opposed to the theological Jesus) may have been like. In terms of documentary evidence, I once read (and am too lazy to look up for citations) that...

    Review Justice League (2017)

I'm not keen on DC's habit of pairing trailers with pop songs. It makes it impossible to tell what the mood of the movie is. Suicide Squad was a classic example. 1st trailer with "I Started a Joke" was all moody, then the 2nd trailer came out with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and was much more jokey even...

Fun Star Trek: The Original Series

I agree. The first pilot might have been progressive with a woman as 2nd in command. But the network interference changed that, and although the expanded universe gave them broader roles, effectively the three main women characters (Uhura, Chapel, and Rand) were receptionist, nurse, and secretary.
