Bit of both really. We had the highs of Girl in the Fireplace and The Impossible Planet and the lows of Love and Monsters and Fear Her. We also had the degeneration of the Rose/Doctor relationship into a teenage romance. For me, overall on balance, if I had to rank the seasons, this one would probably be at the bottom.

A bit hit and miss as the cast and crew found their feet but overall this was a great reintroduction to the series.

Good: We get an intelligent companion in Martha Jones, a medical student who proves herself to be quite brilliant. Another Liz Shaw, if you will.

Bad: Ha, psych! You get another obsessed fangirl! She only utilizes her brain when she absolutely has to, and the rest of the time will pine for number 10!

Good: We get the see the return of The Master. Another renegade Time Lord, and one of The Doctor's greatest foes. He's a suave gentleman who oozes evil, and highly intelligent. On a whim he'll kill you or give you a million dollars.

Bad: He's Tennant in a darker suit.

Good: We got Blink.

Bad: We got the Dobby Doctor, who saves the day with the power of prayer.

There's really so much to love about this series, there really is. But there are some pretty cringe-worthy moments and tropes going on. Doc 10 mopes about because of the loss of Rose, Martha becomes another lovelorn puppy dog, and as much as I do love Simm as The Master, he really is just an insane version of Tennant (although, one could argue that Delgado was very similar to Pertwee, but this is much different).

I really liked Martha as a companion but chainsaw_metal1 is right - the character wasn't well written for many of her episodes. Overall it was a far more consistent season in terms of quality than either of the previous two seasons though with the low point (the 2 dalek episodes) far better than the low points of the previous season.

I like her better than John Simm. I don't know that I like the gender change - tbh I don't care for it - but I like Gomez's take on the character. Of course part of it is how both of them were written.

I like Missy, just like I liked Simm's take on the role. My issue is that the character is written to be batshit crazy instead of menacing. Delgado had evil dripping from every pour. Ainley was great in the role, but even then, he was being written inconsistently, one episode being very subdued and calculating, and the next time just cackling and making plans that made no sense. Now, with the new series, we get a Master/Missy who are just over the top insane. I'd like to see the menace come back to the character, a true villain. As for the sex change, I have no real issue with it. It just seems that with her and the general in Hell Bent, neither really were done for a reason other than to do it. Which is their prerogative, more power to them. It just kinda feels like stunt casting when they do it like that.

A great introduction to the Matt Smith Doctor (I feel weird calling him the 11th Doctor since he turned out to be the 13th). It actually follows the standard format of the RTD era to a large degree. I enjoyed all of the episodes (yes including the Daleks and I'm disappointed that they haven't followed up on the idea of the "specialist" Daleks that were introduced).

I pretty much enjoy this entire series. And as much as the lack of permanent deaths angers me, I still well up when Rory shows back up in the finale. I even like the Deus ex Machina of the second Big Bang. It's also nice that River gets more depth to her as the series goes along.

I love Donna as a companion. I gave a long speech about it in the Donna Noble post, but I really liked the dynamic between her and 10. There's also the scene in The End of Time when he refers to her as his best friend, which has always tugged at my heartstrings (either that, or it's recurring heartburn, or indigestion). And we get a proper introduction to Wilf! How can you not love that?

I quite enjoy her as a character but like @chainsaw_metal1 I wish they'd stuck with a more "evil" characterisation than crazy. Unfortunately that's been Stephen Moffat's understanding of the character from way back. Looking at interviews from around the time of Curse of Fatal Death, he explains his understanding of the Master as someone who's pretty insane and a little bit in love with the Doctor. At the time I thought the Jonathan Pryce performance was so over the top to add to the comedy. Looking back I now think that his performance accurately reflects Stephen Moffat's idea of the Master.

He should stick to comedy.
The problem is I'm not convinced he thought that The Curse of Fatal Death was comedy. There are times when I think that he believes its an accurate representation of the classic series. (Although given the way that Rowan Atkinson performed the role I'd have had absolutely no objection to seeing him take on the role for real).

I thought there was a lot of really good stuff in the last series. Of course, we finally get to see some real depth to Clara as a character just in time for her to die, only to (real shock here) be brought back to life. But I liked the character of Me, although I think more could have been done with her. The episode where The Doctor meets Davros as a child is good, if only for that callback to Genesis of the Daleks. Some nice horror elements throughout, and I loved seeing Gallifrey again.
