    Fun The Trek Franchise!

All of these sound quite interesting and potentially could have resulted in great stories. The only question is how well would the eventual screenplay have reflected the initial pitch?

    Review The Orville (2017)

So I've just finished episodes 2 and 3 of The Orville and I have to say I'm really impressed. The humour has been toned down slightly from the first episode and its more a drama with some humour. Still more jokey than Star Trek but the scripts are excellent. Neither episode would have been out...

    Review The Time Meddler (1965)

Part of me (despite the fact that the idea has been denied) has always wanted to consider The Monk (and later The War Chief) as early incarnations as The Master. I know it doesn't work continuity wise but there seems to be a natural flow for the character - initially a friend of The Doctor...

    Review Justice League (2017)

Well most films do, realistically. I guess it will depend on word of mouth after the first weekend. Truthfully, I'm not sure why there's such a rush to see movies on opening weekend. I generally prefer to wait and see what others think, especially with a franchise like DC that doesn't have a...

It would have been pretty hard for it to be worse.

Review Are Science Fiction Writers Actually Modern Day Prophets?

You're right and I'm a huge fan of ACC. But his foreshadowing of the personal computer was only from the time that computing was beginning to build. He was one of the early ones to predict that they'd become small and cheap enough for personal use. But if you look at his really early work such...

    Fun Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

Just watched the first episode and I'm enjoying it so far. It looks and feels reasonably Star Trek as long as one doesn't try to think too hard about continuity. Hopefully some of those continuity issues will be addressed as we've been promised but overall I'm willing to give it a chance. Will...

Translation: Clinton and James Patterson talked about some story ideas and Patterson wrote the book.

    Review The Orville (2017)

Saw the first episode a few days ago and I have to say that overall I enjoyed it. The humour is a little more low brow than I generally go for but the jokes aren't overwhelming either. The focus is much more on the story with some one-liners thrown in. You can see the Star Trek influence. It...

    Review Moonraker (1979)

The large majority of this movie was pretty decent. The space battle at the end dialled the ridiculousness up to 11 though and dragged the whole movie down overall.

    Review Licence to Kill (1989)

I can't see Dalton ever making Goldeneye. Perhaps an alternate movie with the same name, but his Bond character would have made for a much darker storyline I suspect. Could have worked quite will with the 006 betrayal plotline though.

Review The Man With the Golden Gun (1974)

It's not the best of Bond films but anything with Christopher Lee is automatically improved.

    Review The Living Daylights (1987)

Maybe that's why I'm not as keen on the novels? I liked Dalton's performance in The Living Daylights but, for me, Licence to Kill went too far and was just too dark and depressing.

Review The World is Not Enough (1999)

Wasn't Jonathan Pryce the villain in Tomorrow Never Dies? This one had Robert Carlyle and Sophie Marceau as the bad guys. Judi Dench seems to have made a few enemies in her time as M, having been targeted twice now in two different continuities.

    Review Die Another Day (2002)

The concept that started this film was great. The idea of Bond being captured and tortured was intriguing and having him back "damaged" had the potential to create an intriguing movie. Unfortunately, once they got him back in his suit and shaved it seems they forgot about everything that had...

It gets a solid "meh" from me.

Review The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Of course not. Even with the most generous allowance for stretching the material and adding in the White Council stuff, two movies would have been more than adequate. Instead we got the silly run around with the dragon and Thorin not immediately bursting into flames while riding a shield on...

    Review The Hustle (2019)

Part of me wants to be interested in this movie but another part of me wishes they'd just make it as a standalone concept rather than trying to badge it as a gender swapped remake. The idea of two con artists teaming up doesn't have to be a remake of a remake. It's a generic enough concept that...
